Does anyone know about plus one airfare? Do they get a discount or do you just have to pay normal fare?

Thank you so much! I did so much research before settling on OCC and I am fully confident with my decision - I actually believe I might choose Dr Ortiz over local surgeons! :)

The airfare is not through the surgeons, you have to book on your own through the airlines, so you will have to pay normal fare for your guest.

It was actually cheaper for me to book an all inclusive 7 night package at a different hotel than to go for 5 nights just airfare. I guess probably because they dont have daily flights. Being that I am staying at a different hotel, I will have to take my own taxi to the hospital. But they discounted me a couple hundred dollars from the original price, which is pretty much $100 for each night that I wouldn't be staying at the Sunset Plaza. So it worked out better for me. I am paying for my friend to come as a companion and with the package from the doctor it didnt include food etc for my companion. So all inclusive lets us stay two more days and I am saving money. So all I cam suggest is look at all options available.

What kind of tests do you have to do before they give you a date?

Before you get a date, you fill out a patient history and get approved when you send that in. There are certain patients a doc might not feel comfortable taking. They need to know something about you.

I did a blood test and an X-ray upon arrival for my Sleeve. I was not required to do anything before. Without Insurance companies calling the shots, the process is streamlined and moved quickly.

You will work with a coordinator who will arrange everything but your airfare. Airfare is never included. I felt more pampered in MX than I've ever felt at a city hospital. They're there for you. They're all about you.

I am scheduled for VGS surgery on January 29, 2013 at Star Medica Hospital in Juraez. The hospital will send a driver to pick my husband and I up from the El Passo airport. I am going through BeLite for coordinating my surgery. I am also wondering about follow ups after surgery. Do you go in for post op appointments? How does that work? Who do you go see? Can anyone give me an idea?

You usually see your PCP for followups. If you don't have one or are interested in changing it may be good to locate your new doc now and set your post surgery appointments.

As for following up with my surgeon, he checks in with me weekly via email and he's active on social media so if I have a question I tweet or Facebook him. I also have his email address and mobile number. The MX surgeons are wide open to their patients.

I am schedule for January 9th in Puerto Vallarta so excited to go. Can't wait! I did most of my communication via emails. They were super fast to answer my questions and made me feel really comfortable so now I am just looking forward to it. Wait times were minimal within one to two months I think. I paid $1000 deposit and $5200 when I get there. It worked out perfect for me time wise anyway, didnt want to wait for years before I could get it done and a perk for me was to be able to spend a couple of days recovering on the beach. Good luck with your decision.[/quote

What dr did you use?

I am going to Amerimed Hospital in Puerto Vallarta. It looks really nice, way nicer than the hospital here in Canada. Haha!

Who did you use in puerto Vallarta?

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
