How long were you on clear liquids POST Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Who is your doctor? Dr. Lavin did my sleeve in Covington. I'm on Clear Liquids for a week and then full liquids then adding a lil more. I'm wondering the same thing, why is everyone else getting to eat lol!!

Yep, Dr. Lavin is mine too! This really does suck. I've tolerated everything well...maybe it should be a individual basis. I'm not trying to play doctor here but really I would just like to add a Protein shake in the mix. When did you have your surgery?

I was sleeved 12/19, left the hospital on full liquids and was told I could add mashed taters, yogurt, Soups, and cream of wheat on 12/26. But I'm having a spoonful of potato Soup on xmas day. I weighed on 12/23 and was down 10 lbs.

Congrats on the 10lbs!!

I had mine on Dec 20. Did you get to even see the him? I never saw him once at the hospital! I go back on Thursday so I'm hoping to get some more info on what I really should be doing!

1 day clear liquids in the hospital and then 2 weeks on Fluid diet (ie anything through a straw, no pips / seeds or lumps).

Every doctor is different and you really have to run with the advice you're getting.

The weight will drop off, be patient (I know it's hard! :) ) Let your body get over the trauma you've put it through in it's own way and then watch the scale slide down.

Best of luck,

Deano

You can drink out of a straw?? They told me I couldn't! I miss my straw lol

There was no straw ban here. But the concept was to only eat liquid that are lose enough that they 'could' be drunk threw a straw.

coffee is the other anomaly. I'm 6 weeks post op and have been having an espresso a daily (sometimes 2) for 4 weeks.

This seems to be an ongoing thing here, the different advice. I am a firm believer in if you were happy to put your life in the hands of the surgeon you chose you really need to follow their advice to the letter. I wouldn't want anyone coming onto a forum and picking and choosing from other peoples advice to suit them.

All of the variations (in advice) only amount to the first few / several weeks of eating in any case.

Cheers, Merry Xmas!!

Deano

I was told absolutely no straw. It gives gas.

I'm prone to burping when I drank carbonated drinks through a straw pre op. I haven't had any problem with drinking through a straw post op.

Mine was 12/21 and no I didn't see him. I saw him in the office on 12/7 and I said so the next time I see you will be in the OR? Yep! He is going on vacation 12/26 so I will not get to see him on my first post-op visit. Please Please ask them if we can at least add Protein shakes. This is miserable.....

Yeah I had seen him on the 13th and waited almost 3 hours before he came in! I guess I'm seeing the nurse practitioner. I will definitely ask and let you know! I kinda now feel I was in no way really prepared for this. I still have so many questions! When is your post op scheduled?

Yeah I waited for 3 hours to see him too. I tried to call this morning to make my post-op appt but the office had already closed. What part of the city are you in?

I'm in Baton Rouge. I was kinda disappointed in a way but thankful he was able to squeeze me in before the beginning of the year because we are changing insurance then. I go to the Covington office.

Baton Rouge here, too. Dr. Allain on 10/15, and I was on clear liquids only while in the hospital. Then 2 weeks full liquid (which was rough!), 2 weeks puréed, 4 weeks of soft foods and now regular foods.

How are you now? How much have you lost if you don't mind me asking :)

Feeling great! Gotta pep in my step...

I'm not sure how much I've lost. I had to take the scale out of the house bc I was obsessing! lol

At my 6 week appt, I had lost 22.5 lbs (gotta include the half!) and I'm down another size since then.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
