My experience

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am just now posting because it is the first coherent moment to do so. So I am going to give my experience and it is not pretty and I didn't want Paigers to read it before she came. 1. Dr.Ponce, his team of doctors, Trish, and all of the nurses are AMAZING.

2. This has been the worst hell I have ever been through. I came out of surgery with the most pain I have ever felt in my life. The gas was so bad I couldn't move. I dry heaved all night long over and over until most of the next day. My drain tube leaked throughout my bandages and everywhere with blood about ten times and had to get changed while in such pain and they had to tell me to not walk or get up anymore except to use the bathroom.

I got up to use the b-room around 5:00 last night and I totally passes out taking down a nurse with me and she went out in a wheel chair (sorry!) my friend thought I had a stroke because when I woke up my mouth sagged and no coherent words would come out. 6 doctors and 5 nurses came rushing in. I got to the bed and all of my words were slurred. The cardiologist and Dr. Ponces assistant came in to do an EKG immediately. They thought I had internal bleeding and were going to do a scope on me through the drain tube hole.

Dr. Ponce got up hear ASAP, as he was in surgery but they were consulting him. He checked me out even sticking his finger into the drain tube hole (ouch). They decided to do a blue die test with a scan the next morning to really determine if a scope was needed.

I slept really good last night. The pain is better and nausea is gone. I am still leaking through my tube which isn't normal and going to just do the regular leak test soon.

So right now I would say I would never do this ever again or anything like it, but I know in a couple months this will all past and I will be very happy. It is just going to take time.

The "HOT" Doctor just came in and told me I have to get some blood because I have lost to much which probably contributed to my pass out yesterday. I also have to stay another night in the hospital until I leave for my flight later tonight to be monitored. I am very glad about that just in case. I also want to look out for Paigers.

So there it is not so pretty, but I am alive and I will get better thanks to the awesome staff. Thank you all for the support you ROCK. Angie

I am feeling so much better since the blood transfusion and plasma. They won't let me walk so I still have some gas in my lower tummy. I have had some sips of tea and apple juice. I am also sucking on ice chips every half hour. I am staying for sure another night. I think I scared the crap out of everyone. They all come to check on me all night and day. Dr. Ponce came from home last night after basically just seeing me because I leaked through the dressing of my tube again. He changed it himself. I leaked through it again about a half hour after he left and the ER doctor came right in. They are so awesome here and Trish went to Cosco to buy me new panties because I bled through every pair of mine. I am feeling good now though. Thank you all for your thoughts and will keep updating you.

Well Doctor Ponce just left my room and I will be here 2 more days. My blood levels have lowered even from when I passed out. I am still leaking out old blood and not clotting. They think I have some kind of blood disorder. I will not be able to fly home until the 27th making my friend and I miss Christmas with our families. They are stumped by me and have never had this happen before. Paigers is doing great though and I am happy with that. Keep you posted.

I am so sorry to hear this...hang in there! Have you spoken with your family doctor about this as well? Maybe just to get a second opinion?

You have an amazingly good attitude about all of this. I admire your spirit. Hopefully they'll get it sorted out tomorrow and soon you will be back home snug in your own bed with your family.

I had a similar experience& got 4 units of blood. I work on the surgical unIt& I'm the 1st with complications. My surgeon said it may have been that the staple line or a lap site keeps bleeding because the vessels don't clot off. I got better. I hope you get better& thrive! & btw you are a class act for being nice to that nurse. We appreciate it. & I agree attitude is everything & yours is golden!!!

My thoughts are with you - I am so glad you have a friend there to help you out. I went to MX for surgery and I think I would not have handled this as well as you are.

Keep us posted and I am sorry that you are missing Christmas with your family. I am worried about you and will keep you in my prayers to get better very soon.

Well they gave me a six hour regimen of coagulating medicine all last night and drained and measured the tube every hour and guess what I am still draining. I have been begging to get home and leave on another airline today at 2:55. I am not real sure what they will do at the point since it hasn't stopped. I know they want me here two mores days, but I really want to go home even if it is with the tube and I get to my doctor. I don't want to do anything stupid either since I have been receiving such great care here.

Paigers it was so nice tosee you yesterday and I am glad you are doing well. I will try to see you later today if I can. I get really weak fast even just a trip down the hall and back I am ready to sleep awhile,

O.T.R. I think the hospital is incurring the cost since this is happening while I am here after their surgery. Dr. Morales (Ponce's assistant) was upstairs researching my problem until 11 last night and came down himself later to look at the tube and drain it himself. They really are so awesome here and I would tell anyone who comes to Mexico for this surgery that this is the surgeon and staff to have.

I am still holding out hope to leave before Christmas since my friend does have MVP status with Alaska Airlines through her job. Will post later. Thanks again for all the support. It is calming and better than dealing with my worried family. Angie

I have been worried about you since last night and unsure if you have spoken with your GP yet, but please call the office if you haven't and tell them what is going on-even though it sounds like the hospital you are at is wonderful, if you have a unique situation that needs to be handled, you need to know exactly what you are up against, and possible outcomes-and how urgent you need to get to a facility that knows how to treat you. Do you possible have internal bleeding? A leak? Have they done a ultrasound? Leak test? Anything? Just worried about you-I flew to TJ to have my surgery on my own and this is not normal, you are definitely a rare case and if you are not getting the answers you need, call your own doc or get advice from a hospital in your area-something...

Good news-aim going home today unfortunately probably with the drain tube. My hemoglobins did come up this morning. I am going to see my PCP office tomorrow for follow up. So no missing Christmas thank goodness. Just reallywish I knew what was going on with me and the draining.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
