I Am Soo Freaking Scared to Do This!

Recommended Posts

I know without a doubt that I want this surgery, and I've been mulling it over for looong enough to know that I'm making an informed decision. But for the life of me I am SO scared to go through with it!! During the whole pre-surgery process I just haven't been able to shake the underlying fear...and I can't help but worry I'll chicken out at the last minute. I think it's even been making me procrastinate on doing the final preparation, which is losing the pre-op weight...I mean, it's only 12lbs which I could totally shed in a heartbeat because of my high starting weight. Yet the only way the surgeon will give me a date is to do it.

Can anyone else relate, about wanting the surgery completely, yet being completely afraid to go through with it at the same time?? Any fellow procrastinators or self-saboteurs out there? Eeek, don't know how to just get over it and do this thing!

Once you see the weight begin to come off its easier. My biggest fear is to go thru with it also. Its got to be a normal fear right??

Who isn't scared?! Can you do it alone? I've sabotaged my life away and now, at 53, my kids are older and we raised my life insurance ;) Hopefully nothing bad happens, it's a win/win.

Thanks everyone. For starters, it's a relief to know that my fears are normal and that others have been there and it didn't stop them from going for it in the end. Maybe another one of my problems is that I've been comparing myself too much to people who've been confident and seemingly "fear-free" during the whole process, thinking: "Why can't I be like that? Does it mean maybe I'm not cut out for this because I'm freaking out this much?" Whatever. I think maybe I just need people to remind me over and OVER again about how good this will be if only I take the chance! You guys are great, thank you. :)

I vomited all the way to the hospital after fear and then after surgery wondered why. It was my very first surgery - I think that I now would be less scared of surgery. My suggestion is to take deep breaths and focus on a good outcome to work through the fear. My surgical nurse told me it would be abnormal NOT to be nervous. We are human.

Thanks for these posts. I am really scared too - and I feel silly for being so scared. I'm not really superstitious, but literally minutes after I got the call telling me I was approved and getting a surgery date, there was an e-mail to hospital leadership (I work in a hospital) that we now stock bariatric body bags! Seriously????

Anyway - it feels good to confess this fear. I am having surgery in less than a week now and the fear and excitement are both sort of messing with my mind!

Maybe they mean bariatric body parts! You know, stomaches, intestine pieces, etc. :o:unsure:

I boohoo'd my way all the way into the OR... My mind was a crazy mess so I completely understand where you're coming from... I can't offer any advice to you other than I worried myself to death for nothing, I'm now 3 months out and couldn't be happier!

Have you ever had any surgery under general anesthesia at all??? I had a kidney stone removed under general 2 years ago and I was TERRIFIED!!!! They had to give me a Xanax to calm down. I threatened to leave against orders and everything. I was really being a horse's butt! But, when I was scheduled for my sleeve, I wasn't nervous or scared at all. I never had fear at all over this surgery and it is a big one!!! I was surprisingly calm. I realized I was scared of the unknown from anesthesia. Will it hurt? Will I really not feel anything when I'm under? Will I wake up? Will I remember anything? Once I had experienced it with my stone removal, it was a piece of cake. If you haven't had surgery before, then I totally understand. If you have had surgery, then just keep reminding yourself who you are doing this for and why!

OMG, my husband just got home from work and I was telling him about your post about bariatric body bags, and here's me, duh, I said, "What would be the difference between bariatric body bags and regular patient body bags?" My husband, "Size."

Baby,

Nerves are so normal. That just goes to show that you are aware of the reality of situation and that u care about urself. But at least for me, staying fat has been partly out of fear. I don't even know what I am scared of half the time but I was so tired of it holding me back that I just had to grab onto everyone around me and let their strength pull me through.

U will be ok. Trust that there is something watching over u and try to find a quiet safe place where u can calm ur soul.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
