For Distance Runners

What kind of energy drink do you have? But yes you answered my question as far as overall diet. Everything I can find online about eating for running talks about carbs carbs carbs. There is a little info about eating low carb and increasing your body's ability to burn fat but so far my body seems to be resisting that. I guess I spent a long time teaching it to burn sugar' date=' it's well trained at that. Arthur Lydiard has a book about how to train yourself to burn fat for fuel instead of sugar, which has been around for decades and is well followed by many marathon trainers. But it involves long hard runs 6 times a week, at least 11 hours of running per week. I'm only running 3-4 on a good week.[/quote']

It is this powder from GNC called Cellucor and is low carb (sales person slipped a sample in my bag and that is how I started using it). I can complete all my runs with it. Even the intense ones. Before taking Cellucor, I would squirt some liquid energy drink into 32 ounces of Water. Drinking 32 ounces of Water before running really helps me. I also time my run so it is about 1.5 hour after my last high Protein low carb meal. That helps with energy too when i get close to the 45 minute mark. And i feel great after running, not exhausted but full of natural energy. Remember I take the Wheybolic after running to improve recovery time. I am not sure if these strategies are good or bad, but they seem to be working for me. My average Protein intake is very high, around 120-150 grams. I try and get it from lean meats, but do also drink 3 shakes a day.

As for low carb diet, we go back a ways.

I've been trying to eat a low carb diet on and off from 2004 (when I lost 100 lb from Atkins). Now 100 lb lost still only put my weight at 235. I think this is a set point for me because I could not drop below it until the sleeve (tried a dozen different diets after Atkins, none seemed to work for me). I might add that the reason I had trouble with dieting, despite low carb consciousness, is that I would eat cold stone, apple fritters and brownies far too often.

With the help of running, low carb and sleeve portions I am now down to 190, looking to hit 170 or so.

Hope this helps.

Im 5 weeks post op.. and I dont know where to start with the gym.. I was just cleared yesterday from my doc to do what I need to do in the gym.. but there is no list of what it is Im suppose to do.. maybe I need a trainer to get me started I dont know.. but with my surgery I got a 3 month free coupon to the gym at the hospital where I work and where I got my surgery.. so I want to take advantage of that.. any suggestions to start?

If you have the access and the means, a trainer is not a bad way to go at all. A good trainer can teach you how to get the most from your time spent at the gym, rather than wasting time and energy doing exercises that are of no value.

Just ran 6 miles. Felt great. I ate some little "energy squares" made of whole grains, nuts, seeds and Macao nibs (unsweetened chocolate) with some PB2. The last mile was like running down hill. I had visions of Olympic gold. It must have been a lack of oxygen or something. :)

Renea77, I definitely will.

For everybody...how do y'all balance you're eating for weight loss vs. eating for running? The 2 definitely seem to be in conflict at times. I mean all the high carb food for energy. I really don't want to eat it but any run over 3 miles I really need it. Believe it or not but I can eat a package of almonds (which is mostly fat) and that will get me through 3 miles just fine. But more than that it's not enough. I just had a bad sugar and carb addiction in my previous life and I don't want to go back to that. What do the rest of you do?

.....edit....I just realized that's how this thread got started.

I'm still giggling about the olympic gold, you crack me up. :)

As for diet, I have put carbs back into my food. I eat oatmeal fairly consistently and will often have half a sandwich on the days before a run. I use fruit in my smoothies. For me, it is a slippery slope- I would love to justify eating funyuns as carbing up for tomorrow's run! Lol. In all seriousness, it's tricky for me. I find that I feel the best when my carbs are at 150 or so. If they are not I have problems with coordination (I look like I barely have control of my arms and legs or I kick my ankle), or it feels like there's nothing left to push me, or I feel light headed. I find that carbs are a necessity for me.

I went back and re-read the thread. I still haven't tried the gels, but need to. I did try some energy chews that have caffeine in them and they made me sick! I am not a coffee/tea/soda drinker. Basically I'm almost caffeine free. I plan on trying some gels that are caffeine free.

Tried the thorlos socks. Boy, they were extra cushiony! I did get a blister though under the pad of my foot, so I'm sticking to my cheapy target socks.

And, last but not least...we talked about running back to back! I knew the topic was familiar and I did a search. Apparently, it was already discussed. Boy, we are an efficient group.

Keep running everyone! ;)

Way to go BTB...love the visions:) six miles is awesome! Was that the longest distance you have run so far? You rock!! Tomorrows 7miler will be on the treadmill as its snowing in PA and not expected to stop until tomorrow morning :( hoping to complete that with a good finishing time, will be my longest distance ever ran on a treadmill.

Danyelle and I talk a lot so I too eat a half sandwich before my runs usually(recommended by her). I also like Luna bars before a run. I too found I needed some carbs for energy when I increased my mileage. After finishing my first 5k race last June, I was extremely light headed and felt faint(happened at 2 races last summer back to back) that's when I started asking for advice on what to eat/drink and Pdxman was very helpful and also recommended carbs. I try to watch them though as I didn't get to 230 because I hated them lol. So I try to make healthier choices and find it does help my runs and gives me the energy necessary for a good run. Next thing is to start taking energy chews during my longer runs as I want to keep my energy up during these longer runs(10+ miles) leading up to the half in March. Just have to figure out a system that works, may steal Dany's lol:)

Six miles. Today was my longest run. I usually do my weekly long run on Friday, although some weeks it will be Thursday because I work shift work. Saturday is my rest day.

BTW....signed up for a 10K for 2/23. I'm supposed to run 7 miles that day anyhow, so I'll run this instead....ConocoPhillips Houston Rodeo Run. My first organized run.

BTB are you in Houston? I'd sign up with you but my 1/2 marathon is that weekend at Disney. Darn!!!

There is another race in Kemah in March I'm thinking about doing. However, it involves a team. A full marathon with 4 runners or a half marathon with 2 runners or single runners doing each by themselves.

U gonna do coast to coast?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
