Running Is Fun Again!

Recommended Posts

I talked my daughter into some High Intensity Interval Training running this morning. We warmed up a bit and then ran like crazy up the hill by my house. 20 seconds running full tilt, 10 seconds walking which makes a cycle, 8 cycles to a workout. My daughter who is over 20 years younger was shot at the top of the hill and walked the rest of the way. I did my 8 cycles and recovered very quickly.

If it weren't for my leg muscles hurting I could have done 8 more cycles. My wind was amazing! I guess losing 100 pounds makes a big difference. I feel like I did when I was a lad and never wanted to walk when I could run. What a great pleasure it is!

I'll be 64 this month.

That's awesome Gman. I love running, suddenly. I'm reading a book called "Running With The Kenyans." They talk about their training method called "fartlek." It's basically running intervals. Sprint a minute, jog a minute. Of course, they do it at 8000 feet elevation. No thanks.

We live at a little over 6000 ft elevation and it sucked so bad trying to build up my stamina when I've lived below sea level for most of my life.

GMAN I pray that I'm as active as you when I'm 64 :) Keep up the great work.

Thanks, folks.

Butterthebean,

Another method requires 60 seconds all out followed by 75 seconds rest as a cycle, 8-12 cycles per workout, 3 times a week, 18-27 minutes a workout. It equals jogging an hour a day, 5 days a week according to the study.

I do better at quick, intense exercise periods. Longer workouts make me very tired for a long time, short ones tend to energize me. The studies say HIIT burns fat better and generally gets you in better shape. A good warm up period is essential, hitting that high intensity suddenly could be dangerous.

minkywinks_esposa,

I was quite sedentary until I lost the poundage. Movement was a great annoyance then, a great happiness now.

Wow, the link gman that you posted on this is so helpful. I do Water aerobics and the instructor has us doing these intervals but I had not incorporated them into snowshoeing and the elliptical. Looking forward to even greater benefits!!!

Isn't it cool to exercise because you enjoy it and to be fit and not because you should to lose weight? I have a whole new relationship with training.

I miss running. Something you can do on your own for as long as you want. Two herniated discs and 2002 knee replacement ended that ... I miss racquetball. 57 trying to.get in 4-5 more years of work

Running is fun?!?

????

I'm better at it now, I do it twice a week but its not fun for me. I'm glad you found something you like to do! That's the important part. We stay at the exercise longer and more often if it is doing something we enjoy.

Check out www.Chirunning.com

I read his book and bought the DVD. He teaches a way to run that is highly efficient, reduces injuries and is pain free. The technique is fairly involved, it's like learning to run all over again, but once you start getting it down running is fun and easier. I love it. Best of all, no aches or pains. I got one knee with a torn ACL and meniscus...and that's the good knee. But I run with no knee pain whatsoever now.

I used to love racketball and had cherrios all over my body to prove it. :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
