Fear Of The Unknown

Recommended Posts

I have yet to have my surgery and now that I am getting ready to choose my date and pay my deposit (Self pay in Mexico)...I am getting fearful. Not necessarily of the procedure, but life afterwards. I have been obese my entire life and figured that yo-yo dieting would always be my story...with unsuccessful results. But now having this procedure is really real and I am scared. I want to be healthy, but how will I look? Will I like how the smaller me look? Will I lose friends along the way? Will I become obsessed with losing weight? Will people treat me differently? So many questions that I am not able to answer are floating through my mind? Some that I never thought was even an issue, so it has to be a trick of Satan for me to talk myself out of this blessing!

I am a year post op and my life and health has changed drastically.

Will I like how the smaller me looks? - i haven't met anyone with the VST that has preferred looking obese to looking healthy.

Will I lose friends along the way? I and many others have lost "friends". But these people were never truly "friends"

Will I become obsessed with losing weight? You will become obsessed , but in a good way. you will start seeing success and wants to lose more.

Will people treat me differently? yes, people will treat you differently. its sad but larger people are treated like crap. so the smaller you get the better the general public will treat you.

I am going to be honest, I was addicted to food, I ate when I was happy, sad, mad, you name it. I was amazed at the amount of food I use to eat. People always told me that after the surgery that I would be full after only a couple of bites of food, I was like yeah right. People around will you say I know you're going to eat more that, I know you cant be full. I am year out of surgery and last night I ordered a grilled chicken salad and I was only able to eat half of it. The moment that did it for me is when I saw a friend that I have not seen since college and he did not know who I was because the weight loss. The really felt good and let me know that it was all worth it!!!

I guess...you know how you get to that place where you are comfortable...and not that I am comfortable being like this, but it is all I know. And with this surgery..this blessing and tool that has been provided to us...I know I will lose weight but I have never been smaller and healthy...and being like that is a little scary because I will not have to worry about being huge again because I will not let myself get like this

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
