Follow your pre-op directions and don't add or delete from it without checking with your surgical team. I was required to consume Medifast shakes with no added Protein.< /span>

Can anyone tell me if they did NOT have to go on a liquid diet or fast for many days before their banding? Because I have to travel quite far for my surgery, I will not be meeting my surgeon until the day before, and all I have been told is that I will need to only have Clear Liquids the day before the surgery. Everyone else on this site seems to have had to diet for weeks or months before, so I am worried that somehow I have not been given the right information. Has anyone else not had to diet before surgery? Thanks for your help!

Sorry, I forgot to add that I have lost 5 pounds on my own, but the doctor doesn't know that. I am a slow loser so I probably won't lose much more than that before my surgery day....

From what I've read, just about ever doctor is different and sometimes the patients within the same doctor are different.

I had to do two weeks of low carb, low fat but another lady who went to my same doctor had to do liquids for two weeks before her surgery.

I have to do two weeks of liquids. I was given a choice among a few different drinks and I chose the SlimFast Optima for its price and convenience. I can have 5 shakes a day and up to 2 cups of raw or cooked veggies (no corn, peas, potatoes, etc.)

Today is day 4 and it's actually going better than I anticipated.

i was told to go sugar free as much as I can and look at the nutritional info and make sure the sugar is low and have the Slim fast optima... but the optima have more sugar than the slim fast high protein... i wanted to call the nutritionalist while I was at the grocery store. I also checked out the Atkins shakes and they had less calories and sugar than the SF. I bought a box of each and cut out the nutritional info. I figure I'll email the patient advocate and see what she thinks....

I will be banded on 10/23 and based on my B.M.I. which is 50 I was instructed to join the Optifast plan. I can have up to 8 items a day, you can choose from bars, Soups or shakes. I chose 5 shakes and 3 bars a day. The cost is about $300 for every 2 weeks - expensive!!

I have 11 days to go and it's ok, however not eating any food for 4 weeks has been hard. Especially when I sit down with the family at dinner time, everything looks so good. :hungry:

I think as I have been reading different post on this site that all doctors are different.

Good Luck! :clap2:

Is the reason we are supposed to diet before surgery to shrink the liver and make the incisions easier to do? If so, do you think that any diet we are on is OK as long as we lose something? Or is there something else to the clear liquid fast that is important? Thanks also for sharing your diet/fast requirements. Amazing the variation!

The doctor told me that they have to lift the liver in order to place the port and the liver is the heaviest organ in our bodies. The instruments that are used are small due to the small incisions so they need our livers to weigh less. Does that help?

Once that was explained to me I understood the reason for the diet, however what I don't understand is why 4 weeks of shakes for myself and others are only on shakes for 2 weeks or less?? Different doctors I assume have different ways of doing things.

Oh, well at this point I'm on the home strech - 10 more days!!:clap2:

Thanks Sharlee,

That explains it better. I hope my non-fasting diet will shrink my liver enough. Since the surgeon hasn't met me, she may be unhappy that she didn't insist on the fast! Good luck on your banding ---10 days will fly by --- Good Luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
