Took Prevacid for a year pre op now three weeks post op not working well. Already take two a day.

Wonder ifI should switch to Prilosec, add Zantac? I have the sour feeling in my stomach and metal taste in mouth? It briefly gets better if I eat sometimes.

Yes, the OTC Prevacid didn't work for me. I was taking 3 a day. Protonix is a prescription, but works great for me.

I never had any luck with Protonix, even pre op. I was taking generic omeprazole immediately post op, and 4-6 a day didn't work. Switched to Nexium 40mg (pricey) and Aciphex (even pricier) but they both work like a charm. Protonix may be the generic equivalent of Aciphex, but it doesn't come anywhere near working as well as the real thing for me. I don't believe that generics are as effective as the original for most drugs though.

Protonix isnt a generic... its brand name... the generic name for it is Pantoprazole (which is actually what i take)... Aciphex is Rabeprazole...

Thanks for the clarification, but whether it's name brand or generic, it still never worked for me and several other people I know. I found it to be a total waste of money. Everyone just needs to find what works for them.

No prob :-) thats exactly it... all meds work differently and each persons body responds differently to each med ... trial n error is all we can do :-)

Yes it's funny how everyone is so different. Protonix works great for me. I'm so glad.

I am going to try Prilosec in am instead of Prevacid and adding Zantac later on in the day. Thinking that Probiotics may help too. Took a Zantac this pm.

I don't think so. It is just thrown in with my cocktail of pills and Vitamins that I take every morning. No issues with heart burn or acid, ever.

Zantac is an acid reducer. We need acid blockers. Zantac is not a PPI.

There is also nexxium esomeprazole. That is what took in the hospital after screaming of burning pains. It did the trick and I went home on Prevacid 30 mg 2 times per day. I also believe, and this is just me playing doctor to myself. That finer can help heartburn. I take a decent quantity every night of psyllium husk. 6 pills plus a glass of Water. My theory is that it forms a sludge and pulls acid and bile out of the stomach and it gets excreted. Just my own little experience with myself,

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
