Wine! No Really...a Question For Serious Wine Drinkers :)

Recommended Posts

I am two months and/or two weeks out from surgery but my doc said I can taste and spit to get my palate back. I am doing fine on whites, but reds all taste like they've gone bad. Pinot Noir is a favorite and I don't want to miss out on drinking every bottle in the cellar with DH LOL

Did you find your palate went off after surgery when you jumped back onto the happy bus? Does this go away????? This is a tragedy LOL

I'm a month out, and although I haven't jumped back onto the happy bus again (yet !), my palate has gone completely off the rails for everything else so I'm thinking blabber... er, uh... happy juice won't taste worth a flip either. I'm SO hoping that this will change. Nothing tastes good after surgery

I probably shouldn't be posting this but I am an alcoholic who doesn't like to get drunk- make sense? I started drinking 1 month after surgery. Pinot is my absolute favorite!!!! Last night I had two glasses but couldn't finish the second. I haven't found a change in my palate- I just can't drink as much and it's not because I'm drunk - I just lose interest after a certain amount. And I'm not like most people who get drunk faster- I haven't noticed any change with that. I am 6 weeks out from surgery.

Interesting :) I do expect it will hit me harder (I can hold my own...or could) with the best of them, but I do get drunk if I have too much (I have a friend like you though so I get it). but we'll see about that. With food, my palate is fine. I do find I don't have any interest in "fake" foods, like popsicles, Jello, etc. but things I taste taste like they are supposed to, except for red wine. I almost feel like when I was first learning about wine and only drank Chardonnay! This is not a good thing LOL

I have never had a great nose oddly, but my palate was excellent. I can pick up the most subtle hints of flavors...I like that about me :P DH and a friend opened a lovely bottle of Cab the other night...Cade, very beautiful wines, and I got vinegar and nothing else from a wine I love ;(

I guess I just have to keep working on it. this is not a bus I'm going to quit catching LOL

Gosh, I hope the palate loss is not permanent! I love some wine now and then but I guess the days of pairings are probably over.

I love me some wine! I didn't have any until abour 7 months out and by then everything was tasting pretty normal. Foods tasted way off and smells really got to me early out. I think your palate will come back!

That said, I went out last weekend and was apparently drinking mine and my SIL's wine and got falling down drunk! UGH! I can't even think about wine now without getting a headache!

Your SIL needs to learn to hold her glass tighter LOL

This weekend was a major wine weekend and I am finding my palate is doing much better. Not good enough but I'll just have to keep practicing :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
