Carbs, Carbs, Carbs!

I'm going to be frank, I eat carbs! I was once on diet similar to the sleeve, in that Protein came first then veggies and fruits...and if I was lucky a fat free cheese stick. It worked alright, lost a good 60 pounds, but I was MISERABLE! No corn, peas, bananas, pineapple, only the blandest fruits and veggies were okay. I decided this sleeve wasn't going to be a diet, especially like the one I had tried before, protein is still as important, but I eat Beans and peas and corn and potatoes and mango and bananas, and I'm not afraid of food. It used to either be I ate anything or close to nothing, depending on if wanted to start a diet that day. I can't tell you how many mondays I would start with some horrible diet and to be lucky if I stuck with it till Tuesday. Then once I gave up I'd spend the rest of the week eating horrible, promising myself next Monday would be the day. Two months out, 55 pounds down, and I have yet to feel like I am "missing out" as I so often had felt before. For pre-ops, I can't describe to you how incredible it feels to not want to eat the Pasta your friend is eating when you go out to eat, or to be completely content with just the small bowl of Soup you ordered, knowing that not too long ago eating at a restraunt was all about searching for a meal promised with huge portions and enough food. Carbs, Fats, Suagrs (the good kind of course, I'm not eating a bigmac or anything outrageous!) they're all okay to eat DURING weight loss, don't be afraid of them. Food doesn't have to be our enemy! Moderation and healthy choices is all it takes!

Awesome post! I want to be like you when I get sleeved! Surgery date is Dec. 19th and I can't wait to enjoy life eating the portions we are supposed to eat instead of eating until complete misery!

I completely agree, I am 6 months out have lost 98 pounds and my approach is to not deny myself anything, but to focus on Protein and healthier eating. When i feel the need for someting a little less healthy i know a few bites will satasify me.

that is the goal I am working too as well. I want to use my tool to control the portions and hopefully my head to make better choices. But, I know if I deprive, I will lose my tool along with my mind. thanks for posting this.

Thanks everyone! As I'm writing this I'm eating some kashi Cereal and honey roasted peanuts! And no guilt! There have been bumps in the road, mainly figuring out how to manage acid reflux, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Last year I wore sweats and hoodies everyday (college student who is in Midwest) and it was because I hated the way I looked! Now jeans and sweaters and cute tops! My life is already so much better and I still have 80 pounds to lose! I feel so incredible!

This is what I do too. I never wanted to live the rest of my life feeling as I was on a diet. I just wanted to eat less! Before my surgery I could eat five slices of an extra large pizza. I just wanted to eat less and that is what I do now. I do stay away from pastas and breads and I do focus on Protein but I do not deny myself foods like ice cream whenever I'm on the mood.

I still have mixed feelings and am figuring out how i want to eat. I like the low carb- Atkins diet plan. Breads never excite me. But fats do! Butters, creams, cheeses, all that yummy stuff is zero or low carbs. And my weight loss is in a stall right now. Major stall. I had let more carbs creep in and maybe that's what is slowing down my weight loss. But regardless, I agree that once we hit maintaince we dont have to deprive ourselves. But with 100 pounds to lose, yeah, i do still think i need to 'diet'. I sure could be wrong though!!!

Some people can eat cupcakes after surgery and still lose weight....some can't. We all have to do things slightly differently. But I agree that it's best to take full advantage of the honeymoon.

BTB, the one consistent thing about this surgery and all it entails is how different every person and their plan is. Its a bit freaky for something so scientific (the surgery) to be so different at the same time. It must drive the people who are studying this nuts. :-)

Butterthebean and doxieville- i am in no means putting down what others follow. I respect your choices and what you choose to eat and why not to! I was just super excited because I had a revelation and wanted to share it with people lol. But I think everyone is different and what works best for me might not work for someone else, especially since I'm pretty young compared to other people. But in the end, each person has to do what's best for them, I was just merely offering my experience :))

Just please make sure you're getting enough Protein so that you're not losing lean body mass. You don't want to lose your muscles to weight loss. After all, they are what give you an awesome shape in your new body.

I sure didn't read your post as a put down! I think its awesome that you found out what works for you! Am i jealous? Mildly... Lol. I wanna eat carbs. :(. But alas, i think i'm finding out that i'm one of those people that gain weight just looking at carbs. And I'm bummed.

And what I was trying to say is I am astounded at the differences in surgeons, diets, plans, protocols. What works for one doesn't work for another. I'm kinda dumbfounded. To me it proves that losing weight IS more than just all of us overeating. It's much more complicated than that.

I'm really proud that you are figuring out what works for you at a young age. Good for you!!

I am 9 months out. I could eat a lot more carbs at the beginning than I can now. I'm with butterthebean. I would take the first 6 months and let your body adjust and eat les carbs, then start adding more in the closer you get to goal. I really think you lose more weight with carbs lower on the glycemic index. Fruits veggies whole wheats.

No worries....we're all different, that was my point. If you're having success, I'm super happy for you and I think you should share your story (as you did) so everyone can see there are numerous approaches. I want everyone here to succeed.

I do stand by my other point though, there comes a point where the weight loss gets tougher. Everyone should take full advantage of the honeymoon phase because it doesn't last forever.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
