Pre-Op Diet Day 2 - This Sucks!

Recommended Posts

So here I am, day 2 of my 10 day pre-op diet, (my surgery is Oct 2), I've been doing okay for the most part, but right now I'm having a moment of feeling like this just sucks! It doesn't help that my husband just made dinner for himself & our son, he made crescent dogs (hot dogs wrapped in a crescent roll with cheese), it's something we don't have very often, and haven't had in a long time, it's not even something I ever crave, I think they taste good, but not normally a favorite. But, man ,does it smell like heaven right now! I would almost kill to eat something, ANYTHING right now. I'm supposed to be on a 10 day, high Protein, liquid only diet. I'm already getting sick of the shakes, and broth. I have jell-o in the fridge right now, setting up, so I can at least "eat" that. I've had a SF popsicle too, but that's just not cutting it at the moment. I've seen so many variations of the pre-op diet on here, it's so confusing. What is REALLY the purpose of this?? I know I'll get through this and I'm really trying to keep my eye on the prize, but right now it's so tough, and I have 8 more days of this?!!? I just want to scream and/or cry. Thanks for "listening" to my vent

All I can say is it does get better I am on day 7 and have 7 more hang in there. Normally it is to help shrink liver to help limit complications during surgery.

All surgeons are different in their requirements for sure. But, that is what my surgeon told me, for him he wanted a 7 day full liquid only diet to shrink the liver, so it's not an issue during surgery. I am glad that I did that though for the 7 days pre op, because he had me on a 2 week post op full liquid diet before I moved on to pureed/soft foods for the next 2 weeks. It helped to prepare me for what was coming the 2 weeks after surgery. Hang in there, I know it's hard, I never thought the days would pass fast enough. But, you'll get thru it and then wonder where the time went!!!

I am one week post op today and the pre op diet was harder than surgery or anything I had done since! I lost 10 lbs on the liquid diet and my doc said my liver looked great. I did cheat a little, a bite here and there but never a meal or anything like that. I hope that helps! Good luck and know it will get better!

I totally understand how you feel. I am on I am on day 9 of my 14 day pre op diet. It is liquids just like yours. My NUt told me that you can get won ton Soup and strain out all but the broth. So, I have been getting different broth based Soups and just straining them. Some places will sell you just the broth at a discount. More flavor, no cheating. I tell myself everyday that this phase is my test to see if I can follow the necessary steps to change my eating habits and how I view food. So far so good, no cheating, 5 days to go. You can do it, I know you can. You will feel so proud of yourself if you can do this without cheating. I understand how frustrating it is to have people eating around you during this phase. My dad stopped by and plopped down with his burger and then said" this won't bother you if I eat it will it?". I said no because he came to visit me. Then he tried to give me some Thai tea. (full of sugar and cream). He then looked at my broth and asked, "What are you eating", while chewing on his piece of cow. I just looked at him and said really. He has been at my house everyday of this liquid diet. AAAARRGGG

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
