Hi all,

I'm torn! I thought I wanted the sleeve but now I'm leaning towards the RNY. Why? Most people who I encounter with significant weight loss has had the RNY. Not many people in my support group are sleevers. The program manager mentioned to me to go big or go home, meaning the RNY in her opinion is the granddaddy of them all. I need to make a decision and stick to it. Anyone ever felt torn like this?

I have been contemplating wls for some time now and was always going to do rny. Partial because i only knew of rny and lapband. I wasn't truly fond with either but knew I neded help.

But then back in July I leaned of the sleeve. For me I feel this is the better option. Mainly do to the fact that my intestinal tract is not being screwed with and there are no malabsorption issues. Those two were big for me. Whatever you choose Is a big deal and I think you just need to do your research, pros and cons of each, talk to your gp and surgeon and make the best decision for you!

I also like that there are less restriction later down the road with the sleeve.

I also had a hard time making a decision. I think it will help if you base your devising on your current health issues. I went with the sleeve because it is less invasive. My surgery is on Monday.

I was really (really really) concerned with malabsorption with RNY, so I had to go with the sleeve. I have insurance that will cover the RNY and Lap-band, but I'm paying for the sleeve out of pocket because that's how much I believe in it. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that there is always the option to get RNY after the sleeve if the sleeve does not complete your weight-loss goals, but there's no going back from RNY to anything. The reason you don't see many sleeves is that up until recently in the US, many insurances wouldn't cover it because they deemed it "experimental". Now that they have been testing for quite a few years, IMO it's going to be the new "gold standard" for WLS. With Medicare now approving it, I believe other insurances will follow suit (including my beloved TriCare). I'm not willing to wait any longer to start my life. I know quite a few people with RNY who have stretched their pouches and gained some or all of their weight back...from what I can tell, the sleeve can't stretch.

Sorry to go on and on! Good luck with your choices. I think any procedure to get healthy is worth it!

I have had many friends that have had rny. I am the first to have the sleeve. I went to 11 surgeons, countless seminars, and talked to everyone that I could. There are actually 4 surgeries out there! I decided on the sleeve for several reasons, mainly because of the side effects associated with the rny. I was worried about bathroom issues, since I work outside (letter carrier) absorption of food, and it was less evasive than the rny. I am only 9 days out of surgery but I feel pretty good. I stand by my decision and am feeling like it was the best one. You can talk to people and listen to their stories, talk to surgeons, but ultimately you need to make the best decision for yourself.

Good Luck no matter what you choose!

Stokes mommy, the (r n y) rny is the gastric bypass :)

Kmwheel is right about further surgery if it doesnt produce necissary weightloss. You can have the duodenal switch if you dont lose satisfactory weight with the sleeve. Ive heard the switch is the most effective for major speedy weightloss.

I never had much of a struggle with the decision. I didnt want to have nutrient deficencies to the extreem that gastric bypass suffer from. Lots more dr. visits for years having to make sure your doing ok. I read horror stories of osteo perosis and otheer irreversable damage in people years afterwards so I didnt even consider it. Weight loss is better in some cases. Best thing you can do is internet searches on both :) Good luck with your decision!

Even with sleeve there are some malabsorption issues, just not as many as other procedures. And yes you can stretch your sleeve if you don't listen to your body and constantly over feed!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
