here here ! Yes, we are the lucky ones but statistically we ARE the majority ! The VSG is doing exactly what I hoped it would do - limit how much food I can eat. Like most of us, I am an expert dieter and know exactly what a good and balanced diet is and with the sleeve I can eat this balanced diet, just not enough for five people !!!

I know that I need to follow my surgeon's and NUT recommendations and i do. When I have tried ice cream, cheetos, and chocolates, I can't stop with just a few, I want it everyday. Every time I see a flamin hot cheeto, I eat it, even tough I know it will bother my stomach. :( That's my addiction and therefore, I have to keep them out of my house and sight. I can't do moderation, if it's a slider, I know it and will endulge. So I just want to eat to live and that's it. I focus on organic because what ever is going in my body, needs to be clean, after all, I can only eat less than a child's portion. :) Yes, this is my choice. Plus, my grocery bills are decreasing every day bc I have my family eating this way too. :)

I'm having a pretty easy time of it too. Yes, we are all expert dieters. What I have to keep reminding myself is that this time it's for keeps! The weight really isn't going to come back. My brain hasn't wrapped itself around that yet. I am not even truly excited about the weight loss so far because i've been at this weight before. I know my brain will catch up, it's just kinda scared to get too excited. :-)

Also a uk person and I get the general overview that the us and uk are very different in terms of this op.

For one they jump through a lot of hoops for the op for insurance and what not were we (or at least I didn’t) pay for it so it’s not so hardcore in terms of the don’ts.

I was never told to calorie count to make sure I got only this amount or that amount of anything.

I was told Protein first then if I have room other stuff was never told anything is off limits but of course use my common sense.

For me I wasn’t a overeater/emotional eater so I don’t miss or have them triggers with food and I was honest when asked about my daily intake which pretty much consisted of me drinking coke zero and smoking all day then eating dinner maybe something like a sandwich around 2am.

Which of course isn’t ideal but I would forget the fizzy and smoking curbed hunger and with my ibs I got to the stage I just didn’t want to eat because of my reaction to everyyyyyyyyyything.

I eat well I did before and I do not not pre packaged not ready meals we cook from scratch yes I had takeaways once a week but my house wasn’t filled with junk I didn’t even have chips or candy every day rarely once a week so my relationship with food isn’t a issue for me.

I dunno just reading a lot of posts its like because you have to go through insurance they like to scaremonger you and think well if you’re having this op might as well never drink/smoke/be unhealthy again!

So drum a lot of stuff in your head to concern you.

If you know you have food issues and a bite or taste of something won’t; stop at that then good for you that you know this about yourself and show restraint and control, I honestly thought I would be getting coke and making it flat to drink it but I don’t I have had a bit barely half a can in total from the op forward, I have a can of cherry coke sitting in the fridge I think its been in there 2 weeks maybe 3 took a sip when I opened it and its never been touched since.

Anyway I dunno just saying it seems very different to me in the uk and what I am told and what I should do to people in the us, its less stressful that’s for sure!

lol

This is an interesting topic! I am glad that you've found what works for you and support you in every way. Me? Whoa baby...the thought of eating a little more relaxed or not tracking, scares the daylights out of me! I agree with butterthebean, that a lot of this is figuring out how you got to this point. I know for me it was the food choices and of course the large portions of those foods. I am afraid that if I allow myself those guilty little pleasures, one bite will turn into two, which will turn into 12! I'm almost a year out and have adopted new habits and new favorite foods. I look back at the old favorites the way I do some of my ex boyfriends...better to be left behind :-). I think that in this process everyone has to listen to their doctor, nutritionist and then from that adopt what works for them. Kudos for finding your groove!!

It's true. Due to increased claims, obese people cost the insurance companies money. Smokers cost them money. Drinkers too. They don't want to spend the money for WLS to get you healthy if you aren't going to live a healthy lifestyle, thereby saving them money in the long run.

But still, IMO, it's the right thing to do....live healthy, that is. It's why I had the surgery. But to each his own....a thin smoker is still healthier than an obese one.

It's very interesting how people read and interpret posts in different ways! As I said at the end of my post-yes I am lucky! I paid privately for my surgery-wasn't heavy enough to have it done in the NHS but was still in need of it! I understand that for some fighting the food habit is hard!

What I hoped to achieve by my post was a little peace of mind for people in a similar position to myself! At no point did I encourage people not to eat sensibly-was merely saying my diet is not purely protein! And sharing that my day does not revolve around how many grams of Protein I eat or litres of water! I drink lots of liquid-and was saying that tea, coffee and fruit juice all count as your liquid intake!

Indeed everyone has different advise and limitations! Surely it goes without saying that everyone should stick to what is good for them personally or the advise of their own surgeon!

This forum is about sharing our own experiences! But thank you for pointing out the obvious and snide remarks telling me to ask people who haven't had enough liquids what it does to their internal organs!

Really! Thank god I'm not a slave to my sleeve or my life before! BUT that's just me!! I say again-I know I am one of the lucky ones!!

Glad people here are brave and happy enough to agree and see this post for what it was intended to be! Put it also in the general sleeve section and didn't receive such positive thoughts! Each to their own was my point - and I am happy to be one of the successful ones! Thanks to my sleeve I have my life back and it's going the way I want it too!! Long live sensible eating and healthy being!!

:-) x

Hi Nicky I like your post and didn't take offense at it. I think your doing a great job for with your weight loss. Everyone here is struggling with their food issues and addictions to food. I am 10 months post op and struggle with sugar addiction. I am also diabetic with blood sugars under control at this moment but know I can't do moderation. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope you don't mind, but I added you as a friend. XOXO! :)

I think the Vitamin thing is down to you and your body and food.

Like for me pre op with my ibs I was on:-

B complex really high dose 2 a day

Calcium

Magnesium

Zinc

D3

Folic acid

Rutin which is a Protein supplement

Iron

My levels for everything were constantly low constantly asked if I was taking them and I did twice a day every day plus good food lots of fruit veg everything.

In contrast now ibs seems to have gone and all I take is a multi Vitamin once a day and my Calcium and D3 effervescent combo.

And of course Protein shake.

All my levels bar my Protein are high, normal levels but my Iron is higher than normal.

I think once you pass the stage where you’re relearning how to eat food and introducing food slowly to your new stomach you can make sure you eat well and balanced to get all you need right at the start its just broth and Soup and not really much food so some supplements do help with healing and keeping your levels where they should be.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
