Hi all,

My first post here (woo virgin!). I was sleeved on Thursday 6th Sept so only 4 days post op. I'm concerned about my hunger and need some advice please!

My surgeon says if I can pick it up with a fork, I can't eat it (read: mushy, puréed food and nourishing liquids only) So, I went to town buying jelly, Soup, baby custard, yoghurt etc. plus stocking up on Optifast shakes. Determined to do this right.

Will someone PLEASE tell me why I'm still so hungry? I am eating the recommended amount of the recommended things and I'm so hungry. If I DO eat more than I am told I should, I don't vomit, get dumping or reflux. I am so worried I'm going to stretch already. Everyone else says they don't even feel like food and have to force themselves to eat. I could eat anything (even the chicken pie family had for tea...!)

Welcome,

The first few weeks are the hardest. It's hard because liquid doesn't sit in your stomach for long so you don't feel full. Don't stress you sleeve will not stretch from liquids.

Until you start on real food you will probably won't feel fully satisfied but also some people thinks its hunger when you are actually dehydrated, make sure you are getting enoug Water.

Also could be reflux. This can also confuse you that you ate hungry, good luck, hope that helps.

Thanks so much. That relieves some of my worry but I'm still concerned that I'm going in the opposite direction in an effort to not eat too much and hence starving myself!

acid re-flux can give you a hunger type feeling. most Sleeve patients are sent home on pepcid to counter act this. Also head hunger can be apart of this. Head hunger is more of a mental craving than a physical craving.

Whoa. I spoke way too soon about my lack of dumping!! Just had the whole kit and caboodle; the runs, hot sweats, nausea, seeing stars, immediate overwhelming fatigue, shaking.

Learnt my lesson.

Man. I wasn't going to post anything under your topic but just have to say how sorry I am. I had surgery around the same time you did and man I would be pissed and freaked out if I was really hungry all the time! I am only allowed Clear Liquids the first week and then thicker liquids the second week and "baby food" the third week. I would definitely try the acid controller. I sure wish I had a magic answer because I am sure it's hard to feel this was all worth it at this point. But hang in there and keep coming back here for support. I will keep thinking of solutions. I was the same and I did have some mushed bean and bacon soup and split pea. I also mixed plain greek yogurt with parmesan cheese and either dry ranch dressing or salt and pepper and it felt satisfying. I did try really mushed foods with very small bites of meat around day 10 and I have never had any nausea or reflux or anything. Just be careful. Maybe blend the chicken pie filling with some extra broth to make it a little soupy. Good luck and be glad you feel good.

I have absolutely no idea. Actually...that's kind of a lie. I shook a bottle of diet lemonade until there were no more bubbles and had some of that (I was cravingggggg it).

I think it was too syrupy even though it was diet. If it wasn't that, then it was just because I ate too much.

Please be careful with what you mush up to eat. Talk to your doc, because everyone's doc is different! However, I was like you: all liquids. I like the fork analogy!

Anyway, the purpose is to REST your tummy. You do not want it to try to have to work at digesting. So, I'm going to disagree (no slammin' - just differnet opinions) with the person who suggested you eat a bit more chicken or more substantial food. I don't think your doc would agree, but PLEASE call and ask. One thing is consistent here: everyone's plan & doctors orders are different and we need to respect that.

You may not be hungry; dehydration is often mistaken for hunger.

Good luck & sorry about your dumping! It's kinda normal to try to 'test' your new sleeve. It's not normal if you keep doing it. :-)

I am a week out and I have to make myself drink and eat so I would definitely check into dehydration or the acid reflux. I feel bad for you and will pray that you get your sleeve figured out. I wish it was the same for everyone. Them we could just use directions. Don't get discouraged you will succeed!!!

I think you're right; dehydration is my main problem. I rang the dietician and from what I told her, she says I'm not getting enough fluids in. So I've got my bottle of diet cordial (with the minimum amount I need to drink throughout the day) and my daily goal is to finish that. Any fluids above are just a bonus!!

I love your name Doxieville; I've got two dachshunds myself!

Smart girl, calling your dietician! But then, ALL doxie owners are brilliant people! LOL! We have 4. Two long hair cremes and two long hair reds. Great dogs. Got them from rescue groups.

I'd love to have more!!! Our beautiful long haired red mini fell last December and broke her back. $7,500 in surgery later.... Think we might just stick with two for now. We had a black and tan long hair mini but she passed away aged 17. Now we have a wire hair mini as well.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
