I Never Expected This Pain!

Recommended Posts

I'm now 3 days post op and everything went smooth. I have 7 little incisions and no drain. I've been walking since just a few hours after surgery... But damn! My stomach HURTS!

I can't lay in my bed. I can barely stand upright when I walk. I can hardly get up from a chair. I can't bend over to pick up toys. And my stomach is still bloated. Ooooouuch.

How long does this pain last? :(

It feel like I've done 2000 crunches with 7 little tight spots that pull when I move.

You have just had major surgery, pain is expected. Just take the pain meds available to make you more comfortable. It will get better soon.

Everyone on here is like "no pain!" and "went back to work the next Monday!"

I am definitely making use of the pain meds!

It only lasts for a week or two. People will get on here and be a miracle of science and say they had no pain and tell you all about their stories (like you care, you have a question!) but what you're feeling is totally normal. Go easy on yourself, don't worry about those toys, and let your body heal. And please don't listen to the folks on here who brag about not needing pain medicine. Take your pain meds as you need them and try to stay ahead of the pain if you can.

Thank you. :)

I appreciate knowing that this is normal.

I have noticed that and more power to them. I had pain and needed meds for the first couple of days, took four weeks off of work as well. I needed that time to heal and adjust to my new way of living, just do what works for you. :)

Definitely leave those toys on the floor, rest, hydrate and stay on top of your pain so it doesn't get out of control. Sometimes if you measure your pain level on a scale of 1-10 and your pain is above a 4 then I would take your pain med if its due. I dont know if you miss any doses or skip several hours without taking it but sometimes that can contribute to uncontrolled pain.

Maybe you could give updates on how you are doing.

Take Care,

Jaimy

I am planning vertical sleeve to be done in November

I was one of the lucky ones...little to no pain after surgery. Never took meds once home. BUT, I have had 4 other stomach surgeries, and I was "owed" a smooth go this time! Seriously, everyone heals at a different pace. At about week 2, I thought I was perfectly healed. I went out to the store, and I was exhausted after 10 mins of walking. It was back to R&R for me! You'll be feeling fine in no time at all.

My surgery was on Tuesday and I completely understand. I was miserable and am not much better then that today (today is my first day without vomiting)

I have noticed that for me the only thing I could keep down without terrible heartburn/acid reflux is Popsicles. They also hydrate a bit so that makes you feel better. But above all SLEEP! Make sure you get up every hour or two and walk around your house to prevent blood clots in your legs from forming but I guarantee you the rest/sleep is the best thing for you.

I have a high pain tolerance..but when I had surgery in april, I was in excruciating pain..the morphine did nothing in the hospital and neither did the pain killers after

It lasted about a week and a half..then I was just really sore but it was more annoying then painful.

I have no idea how anyone had no or little pain or even went back to work a week after ..their bodies must have some freakishly extremely high pain tolerance

I really expected to be in lots of pain after surgery but I wasn't . They gave me a b-12 shot ,morphin, decadron, reglan, they applied a transcope patch and a couple of other things I do not remember. The only problem I had was my BP was way low and they kept me in recovery 3 hours , they started me on taradol ?on spelling. In the recovery room. They told me if I followed the diet to the "T" I would have less complication and pain.. Btw I have 6 incisions and 1 is the one that hurts.. Each and everyone's body is different. So take all the time to heal and get to the point of no pain. If we try to hard and move faster then our bodies are ready to heal .. we might end up hurting ourselves..

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
