I had my final appointment with my doctor and nutritionist today. My surgery is on Tuesday. I was told that I didnt have to do a pre-op liquid diet....however, I can do it if I want to (its optional). Anyone else had this option? I will do the liquid diet just so I can start getting used to my new lifestyle. I think I will miss my coffee very, very much though!

Lucky! I thought the pre-op liquid was like a sick joke. You are following the post-op plan, but without the surgery to get you through...so I was Hungry! I followed it religiously though. I did have coffee every morning up until the last morning before surgery. My physician gave it his blessing as long as my last cup was done a full 24 hours before surgery. That was heaven! After surgery I really did not miss coffee at first. I was too busy trying to get liquids down. Good luck to you!

It was optional for me too. I think it has to do with lower BMI and / or lack if co-morbidities.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your BMI? I am a lower BMI and my office is more relaxed with me also about the 2 week pre-op.

My two weeks pre-op are just to eat lots of Protein and low carb. Two days of liquids only.

Well, i did not have to go through any pre operation diet.

The only thing is my doctor recommended that I eat light during the last three days.

I think it depends on the amount of fat you have to loose and the tests done.

I didn't get an option. 1 week of 2 Protein Shakes and a meal, 1 week of 4 Protein shakes and all Clear Liquids the day before surgery. On the two week pre-op, I can also have sugar free popsicles, broth, chrystal lite, tea, anything without sugar. The meal is no more than 300 calories - 6oz of lean meat or fish and 1/2 cup of veggies. This is supposed to make the transition to the new way of eating easier and help the body become adjusted to runniing on a lower caloric intake, plus shrink liver and belly fat to create more room for the surgeon. My BMI is 39.5. My Dr said if I just follow the plan exactly as he gave it to me I should be fine. He was just voted one of the top dr.s in the field by his peers and has been doing this exclusively for years. I have a friend, however, who is having a gastric bypass 2 days after me at a different hospital in town and has no post op diet. Just clears the day before surgery. Go figure.

My BMI is 37. The optional diet was 'lo carb / high protein' for 7 days post op.

For those who have to or are choosing to do the Protein Shakes pre-op--what size are the shakes?

I've found some that are 500 grams, 55 grams of Protein, almost 300 calories, 14 grams of carbs....

I've asked about the pre-op liquids and the clinic said they don't ask for that, but it's up to me. I'm just not sure of how much. These full shakes x 3 per day just seems like a lot. Maybe 2 x plus a meal? If a regular normal meal-shake is 200 grams or something, then one bottle per day could be enough with 1 regular meal.

I'd LOVE to lose about 25 lbs before the surgery. Of course, not knowing when the surgery is makes it tough to plan, so I'm trying to get ahead of the game.

My pre op diet is low fat similar to weight watchers, no liquid only but I think I will do final day liquids just to be safe. It's quite relaxed more no alcohol no over eating.

It really is amazing how many different ways people go into this isn't it?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
