Hiatal Hernia Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I just had surgery this past Tuesday, I am doing well, but we found out that I had a hiatal hernia, so the surgeon fixed it while he was there. I know others have had this, what was your experience? Does having a hernia fixed at the same time make things worse? I feel alot of gas pain and I am trying to walk it out, which it has gotten better, but I am not sure if the hernia makes things harder too. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm also curious about this topic. I just had my upper GI yesterday and the report said that the Dr. found an esophageal hernia in me as well. How big does it have to be for it to need fixing?? I think mine is 1cm....

Well, mine was not found on the stomach scope, I found out about it after I woke up. My sergeon had told me that if I had one, they can sometimes go without causing problems for a long time, but since he was already going to be there, he would just take care of it.

Do the doctors charge more for This hernia.??

Well for me, my insurance did not cover the sleeve becuase I do not have bariatrics on my plan, but my insurance is covering the hernia, they are basically billing them seperatly.

I am having a hiatal hernia repair too. My surgery was supposed to be today, but had to be rescheduled to Monday. Long story... But, initially, my ins said that they would cover the sleeve and not the hernia because I had no record of problems with it. I couldn't wait to get a hold of that ins rep and say that if you look at my chart, I have had abdominal problems for years. Just because I didn't know it was the hernia and acid reflux causing these problems, doesn't mean that the problem didn't exist! Of course, now they are paying for both!

Do you have any extra problems associated with the repair and not the sleeve?

I am not sure yet, I know there is a lot of that gas they inflate your stomach with during surgery which is causing gas pains. I sometimes feel discomfort when I drink, but it is not really pain, so I can't say to what it is. I am up and moving around though and have not had any major issues yet, I hope to heal and not have any leaks or issues. Good luck to you with your surgery.

My doctor just called me and said that the pain is from everything being sore, gas and the hiatal hernia, He said the hernia makes it so that there is more to heal, but like I told him, I feel better everyday, so I figured it would pass and I just need to wait. Thanks everyone.

I had a hiatal hernia and they repaired it during my surgery. I can't say if it was any extra pain since since I have nothing to compare it too. But I did not have much pain, certainly not in that area. The doc told me to be extra careful lifting anything for 6 weeks. I did have to pay $25 out of pocket for the hernia repair. I thought that was dumb. Apparently my insurance covered 100% of my sleeve but not my hernia. No biggie. By 3 weeks post op I felt like I never had surgery.

I have nothing to compare it too, but I was happy that I killed two birds with one stone. Recovery was easy for me, other than one incision that took longer to heal totally. I put triple antibiotic ointment on it for about a month. Pain and all, no big deal. That gassy feeling, but I was warned ahead of time about that possibly happening.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
