I was sleeved on aug 6th, so one week ago today. It took until about day 4 to start feeling human again! I still don't feel like eating or drinking, but that is improving day by day. For me, the right side is really the only pain because that is where the main incision is that the stomach was pulled out through. My surgeon said this would be the worst spot and boy was he right! I am getting much more mobile and I have been walking well though. I does get better. Good luck!

Try warm liquids. That made a world of difference for me!

Feelings are all normal and will get better day by day. I HATED Water my first week and that is normally all I drink. I agree with DEZ1975, warm liquids were much easier. I drank a lot of broth (which I was thoroughly sick of, but at least it went down) I wish I liked tea, because that was soothing. The other thing that helped me with water was adding Crystal lite. This is something I normally hated, but suddenly liked for a short time post surgery. I read somewhere on the forum that the PH of water does not agree with your altered stomach initially after surgery, that trying different brands or adding flavoring helps. Someone posted that they were able to drink Smart Water when nothing else would go down. After the first two weeks, nice ice cold water became my drink of choice once again. Every day gets much easier. I am two months post op now and have no trouble with water anymore. Hang in there. The first few weeks are hard, but it gets much better. Try to take one day at a time, get rest when you can and get out and walk.

If your surgeon fixed a hiatal hernia while he was in there, there will be some swelling associated with that as well. I found it helps to stand or sit up straight to drink for the first two weeks, to give the esophagus a straighter path into the stomach. I still need to do that occasionally at 21 days out, but it was really helpful early on.

I had a few of the same symptoms yesterday. I went to see my Dr. for my week check up and it turns out the pain is not in the stomach. It's the spleen, because some of the blood vessels where cut its repairing it's self. Also if they had to repair a hernia on your esophagos that's what hurts when you drink. I had a nurse put my IV on the same spot they had put the IV for my endoscopy. It hurt like hell so I made her move it and I'm so happy I did. Also your upper arm hurts because of some kind of muscle pain. My Dr. said to apply heat to it and stretch it all the time. It's actually feeling a lot better. Good luck

Hi there!

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better too:) I went to the Dr today and he believes I have a hematoma (accumulation of blood) in my muscles on that right side and that is what is causing my discomfort. Unfortunately that accumulation can take some time to reabsorb, so I am just going to wait it out. I did ask if I am still having this pain in a month if he would do a CAT Scan and he was agreeable. On a positive note, I'm down 14# !

I had a lot of issues with Water too at first but I made myself drink it so I wouldn't get dehydrated. The lemonade they had at the hospital went down easier for me. Also when I got home and had milk, broths and Protein Drinks they all went down better too.

About day 4 or 5, the swelling starts to go down and you start to feel a little better. Once the drain is out, life is good. The right side is also the in incision they pulled your stomach through, so that could be the source of the pain.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
