A1C Level To High For Surgery

I got a call today from the nurse and she said my A1C level was extremely high and the doctor will not do the surgery if it's higher than a 7 well I am. Diabetic and have been on pills and recently have been out on insulin the reason I really want the surgery is b/c of this disease can anyone relate to this problem not being able to have surgery b/c of A1C level. This has been a long 6 months and now it still is not at the end I'm praying he still will do the surgery I really need this.

my diabetes was always controlled with my meds,

A1C never higher than 6.7 usually much lower - talk to your PHP about this problem. what does surgeon want you to do so you can have WLS

yes one big reason to have the WLS is to alleviate some of those high numbers, or in my case after 20 years, of being diabetic i no longer take any meds or insulin WOOHOO

i hope this gets solved and you will have your WLS sooner than later

He is calling it correctly. You need to get back on your insulin. Thing is, uncontrolled means higher heart disease rates, higher complication rates, slower healing times, and better chance you will just not really be productive in the weight loss.

Remember - diabeties creates issues all through your body. It affects your thoughts, creates cravings, it is basically an auto immune disease, and affects how you process your food. it relates to cancer, heart disease, breathing ailments, degenerative bone conditions, arthritis...

There is no guarantee this surgery will cure you and even if it does it takes time. you have to stay in your meds until told to do otherwise.

I'm surprised that 7 is the cut off. Mine tends to be 6 to 6.5 but that's with a lot of medication. My doctor tells me that under 7 is very good and well under control. I could understand 8 being too high to do the surgery but 7 surprises me.

Thanks everyone well I was just put on insulin July 6 so now my sugars are more controlled than before I'm just hoping this delay doesn't last to long I think I have to wait 3 months so they can check it again

That is worrisome. I'm type 1 and have trouble getting it down below 8. I am on an insulin pump and will always be insulin dependent, but WLS is suppose to help me. I get my pre op blood work on August 6.

When I had my surgery my doctor told me that it doesn't matter what my A1c was because the sleeve will make it better, but I do know that it is very hard to heal quicker if ur A1c is too high. I've been type one for 15 years

Ok well I understand about the healing process taking longer but the main reason I want to have surgery is b/c I'm a diabetic I heard the surgery helps in a big way.

I'am so sorry to hear this. I thought this was one reason we needed surgery was to help our diabetes. I'am a type1 but my A1c was 7.9 before surgery and after 3 mths is down to 7.1. I pray everything works out for you.

I'm diabetic also and the meds. made me so sick that I opted in having the surgery done. Haven't done it yet but I am in the process now. My A1C was 8.9 and I pushed myself to go to the gym and follow the preop meal plan and it is now 6.5 in less than 3 months.

I know we hate when people tell us to exercise and diet. But if this is what it's going to take to get the surgery then do it.

I am in the same boat as you. I want to get sleeved to help with my diabetes. With much luck it will be in remission in no time. Good luck.

No I stopped all medicine. I did it with just diet and exercise.

My doctor requires your A1c be below 7.5 in order to have surgery. Mine was at 8 but I brought it down eating nothing but Protein and veggies along with exercise. My surgery is Aug.14th. I wish you all the best and I know u can get your A1c down .
