Self Imposed Pre-Op Diet......need To Lose, Lose Lose

Recommended Posts

I am having my last required appointment on July 31 then will submit to insurance. I have Cigna and surgeons office coordinator says she's confident I'll be approved given my bmi and co-morb's. Surgeon requires at least a 10lb loss before surgery, or he'll cancel, however I have a personal goal of losing 30-40 lbs before hand, really want to be under 300 lbs before surgery. I don't have a surgery date but based on what the surgeon said "you schedule your appointment as far out as you think it'll take for you to lose the 10lbs", I'm saying surgery will take place around mid to late August.

What pre-op diets for you guys have resulted in significant weightloss? Let me say I absolutely can't drink the milky substances, they make me gag something aweful. Is it unreasonable or impossible for me to think I'll be able to sustain on a liquid diet for 3 or 4 weeks?

Please give me some advice.

Atkins pretty closely mimics the post-op diet anyway. I suggest you use My Fitness Pal and aim for 70 grams of Protein daily, along with 64 ounces of Water. Give yourself a calorie cap as well, something like 1200-1500 calories, at least for pre-op. You should drop weight like it's a bad habit if you follow that! :)

There are several posters here who did self-imposed pre-op diets and lost incredible amounts of weight. Paola and Patrick Curl come to mind right off the bat. Paola dropped 80 pounds pre-op doing a liquid diet for several months.

I dropped 13 pounds on my pre-op two week, doctor-required, liquid diet. You will probably drop that 10 pounds in a huge hurry if you do liquids pre-op, but every pound you drop is a step in the right direction.

Good luck! :)

I have Cigna too and my approval only took 6 days after submitting paperwork...I had BMI 39, and high BP, diabetes, high cholesterol and degenerative disk disease in my back. I had to use opti- fast liquid diet pre- op though and lose 9 lbs.... Cucumbers and celery a negative calorie foods, somewhen you need to crunch something try those ..it helped me through some weak moments when my willpower wasn't as strong as my stomach. A tbsp of peanut better on the celery is a good Protein snack too. I found a book on Amazon before and after bariatric surgery that has some yummy protein smoothie recipes too.

30-40 pounds in one month is not exactly healthy. I suggest you push your surgery out one more month in order to give yourself time to learn to eat more correctly. Less of a shock to the system that way. 30-40 in TWO months is still tough, but much safer IMO. To get there, you MUST 1) make sure you get enough Protein every day, every meal if possible, (it really helps with the hunger), 2) limit quantities at EVERY meal (you want to shrink your stomach some) and 3) REALLY cut back on the carbs, ESPECIALLY sweets and any beverages with sugar or alcohol. You CAN do it, but this whole process is as much a mental thing as physical. Good luck!

Agree heartily with Lissa's suggestions. Also, I want to chime in that you must keep in mind that if you lose a significant amount prior to surgery, don't expect a huge drop in your first month. The norm is to lose a big chunk if you didn't do a pre-op diet, and a more moderate amount of weight if you did one.

Good luck, and my advice is not to beat yourself up too much if you don't achieve your goal of 30-40 pounds, because anything you lose over 10 pounds is a bonus victory. But learning to track your food and eat in moderation now will be very useful to you post sleeve.

MrzSongbird, I'm not You Tube proficient. I do have a blog that I really need to update, but VST is my biggest place to post. :) I like it here and I like getting positive feedback. This is my support group on a daily basis.

I'd be the one who lost their cool if someone left a negative comment on a YouTube video I made, I'm afraid. I do owe one YT video, though. I need to figure out how to record myself happy dancing for my 100 pound mark and then post it.

I totally agree and know those results are not typical. I'm really expecting more like 25lbs. I have a lot of work to do removing those bad things from my diet.

I think I am going to wait until I get a surgery date then begin the liquid diet.

Those are two foods I love, I actually put cucumber in my Water for flavoring. I have been looking for good books too, thanks. I wish you all the best.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
