My Journey So Far - 3 Month Surgiversary With Pics

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Tomorrow is my 3 month Surgiversary.

Just wanted to give an update as to my progress.

I was sleeved 4-24-12 by Dr. Kwon of Tri-State Bariatrics in Middletown, NY at Bon Secour Hospital in Port Jervis NY.

Starting Weight: 375

Starting BMI: 62.4 (super obese...)

Starting Clothing Size: 34/36

Surgery Day Weight: 370

Surgery Day BMI: 62.4

Current Weight: 288.8

Current BMI: 48 (morbidly obese...yay!)

Current Clothing Size: 28

Weight Lost: 86.2

BMI Change: 14.4

Things I can do now that I wasn't able to do before: Walk, walk without back pain, tie my shoes, cleanse myself properly after the bathroom without any struggle at all, different sex positions, completely reach my arms behind my back and touch hands, fit in the car without my stomach even coming close to the steering wheel, fit in my husbands clothes (some of them), lost my "hump back" (fat section at back of my neck), go to the gym, get out of the pool using a ladder (last time I did that, the ladder step broke, humiliating me....no stairs to get out of pool, had to have my husband literally push me out of the pool), fit in a movie theater seat, cleanse myself in the shower without having to twist in odd ways, touch my toe to my head (lol), clean the house without getting winded, cook for my husband without needing to sit every 3 minutes, go for a walk and not feel like I'm dying, be proud to get weighed at the doctors office, switch my wedding rings to my middle finger because they became too loose on ring finger, find clothes that fit me, the list goes on...

I am very happy with my decision to get this surgery.

A few years ago, my father and stepmother got on my case to get gastric bypass - since I was soon to be graduating college, my health insurance was only going to last for 6 more months. At that point, my dad literally said to me "tell the doctor that you soon won't have insurance so that they can rush it." Back then, I was not mentally ready for it - perhaps we are never fully mentally ready for it, but I felt now that it was my choice, I was settled in life, I was happy - now was the right time to do it. I only told a few people about it - but I have been telling people ever since. I only got one not so great reaction - "don't you think that was a little drastic?" but I know that came with love. Besides that, nothing but love and support. I even told my dad about a month ago...he was happy for me, but had to bring up that a few years ago I didn't do it when he asked, but I simply had to tell him that I wasn't ready for it them.

So why did I do this surgery? Two main reasons - to be healthy, and to be able to have children. I'm 26 years old, and would like to have children soon. There are literally hundreds of other reasons (yes, I have a list), but don't feel like retyping it now.

So, what do I eat on a daily basis?

I pretty much try to stick with Protein foods - light string cheese, yogurt (lite, or chobani), deli mean (turkey/chicken), grilled chicken, that kind of thing

I do have some fruit - apples, strawberries, cherries, watermelon, grapes and peaches.

I do have some veggies - cabbage, broccoli, green Beans, carrots, and some potatoes, although I really try to limit that.

I do not drink any kind of Protein Drink - as they all haven't worked out for me. I try to get my protein in through my food.< /span>

I also try to drink a lot each day, although I don't think I quite always get the 64 ounces in.

So, what foods don't work you ask?

chocolate (diarrhea); graham crackers (diarrhea), eggs (stick), breads (extremely full feeling), lemons/oranges (acid reflux), boneless buffalo wings (horrible gallbladder pain - requiring me to go to ER..more on that in a minute), Vitamin Water (diarrhea), regular gatorade (diarrhea)

Now, you'll notice that everything with me causes diarrhea, but nothing causes me to throw up. There have been a few occasions in which I thought I might vomit, but I never have.

Now, back to the boneless buffalo wing - so I had one, and I felt completely fine, so a week or so later, I had three. Felt fine until night, when I thought I had horrible heart burn. Mylanta didn't touch it. Fast forward to the next day at 5 p.m. I was in the ER. Horrrrrrrible pain right below my rib cage in the center. EKG, blood test, ultrasound, CAT scan, xray - all came back negative. They are really not sure what the problem is. I have an appointment with the GI for August 1st. I know eating the wing was a stupid thing to do, but the amount of excruciating pain I was in was ridiculous...I had to have a morphine IV drip.... so I'm thinking that there must be something wrong....especially because since then (two weeks ago) I just haven't felt right. I haven't had the crazy pain, but I've had some mild discomfort.

Do I have any regrets? Every now and then I miss eating certain things, but it's def not a regret. I would do this all over again.

Most people on here say that they wish that they had done it sooner - I'm not the same. I am glad I did it now because I know that I was ready NOW, not before. I didn't want to be pressured into a surgery or get anything rushed. Plus, if I did it back then, it would have been gastric bypass, not the sleeve, and I don't think I would have been happy with that.

I am going to upload some pictures of me - before when I was skinny at about 16 years old, then me at my heaviest (375) and then some of me in a new fabulous size 28 dress I bought the other day. Also, I'm uploading pics of me in my "fat" pants, size 34/36.

Any questions, comments, etc, please let me know! Always looking to help!

Kimmy J

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
