Fran, I'm thinking of you right now! I know you got to the hospital about a half hour ago - sending good happy thoughts your way!

Today I'm on Clear Liquids, so I took the day off work lol. I didnt think I'd be able to function too well, so for everyones benefit I stayed home. Now only if I had enough energy to get that laundry done lol... oh well, that's what the boyfriend is for!

I'm definatley game on the support group in December, and then setting up our own one. I was also thinking that maybe we should create a new chat forum on here under "social groups", that way we don't overrun the Long Island thread lol.

I hope everyone who is healing is doing well, and all those who are in the process need to know that it does go fast. I'm suprised how fast this week of pre-op liquids has gone, thank GOD!!

Ok, time for some ices!! Whee!!

I am an ultrasound tech, and I was a bit skeptical about the pre-op diet shrinking the liver, so I looked at and measured mine before and after....it was amazing! It shrunk by 3 cm and was a lot less fatty. Made a big difference!

Christine

That's pretty cool! If you don't mind me asking - Do you enjoy your job? Where did you go to school?

I work for a finance company and I think we're going to go under by the end of the year. I was thinking of going back to school if I get laid off. My sister is an RN, so she's trying to push me in the medical field. I was looking into ultrasound/x-ray. Maybe some accounting courses - I'm not sure yet. Scary times out there, I know I won't be able to get a job in my field.

For people with port discomfort - I kept an ice pack on my port site for the first week and I think it helped me a lot.

For gas pains, I think the only thing you can do is walk and move around as much as possible to help move the gas out of your body.

I know consuming liquids isn't fun right now but be sure to get in as much Protein and Water as you can so you'll heal quickly!!

((( swift healing vibes to all )))

Hi Everyone

I hope everyone is feeling and recovering well.

OMG - Fran my thoughts are with you. I know you will come through this with flying colors. I can't wait to hear from you.

Sue--I start liquids next week so if you are free for lunch this weekend let me know.

Lisa - I am glad to hear you are feeling well and I would love to get together to hear your take on your experience.

Christine - It was so glad to meet you last weekend. We live so close, lets make the most of it and use each other for support. I know the weather got cold quick but maybe we can meet at the Sunvet mall with the kids and get some walking in this winter.

Amanda - it was also great to meet you. I saw your post on the convention thread. Are you considering going?

I would like to once again throw out the conference room in my office as a meeting place for our group. Hold, Dec 10 at around 6:30 as a date. I just need to double check with my office manager to make sure the building is free.

BTW--I thought of a funny name for our group. If anyone knows an alcoholic you may know that they refer to AA as being a friend of Bill W. Its like a code name. So I thought a funny code name for us could be....Friends of Betty. That's what i am going to refer to our group as.

Hi All!!!!

I'm banded....YIPEEEEEEEE!!!! Surgery went great! No problems, Dr. Giess said it went perfectly...THANK GOD! I wasn't nervous until I went into this room to get undressed....then they hooked me up to machines and my blood pressue went STRAIGHT UP! The nurse was like, are you nervous? DUHHHHHH! Yeah, I think so! Anyway, it went down shortly after that.

I have more pain today than yesterday....but its doable. I took Tylenol before I left the hospital and I'm feeling better... Today, before I left, I had a surprise visitor from the board...Amanda (Ajoneen) came to visit me! She had to go and see Dr. Geiss so she stopped by to find me...wasn't that so sweet of her! I was so happy to see you,

Amanda ...thanks for all the great advice and for taking time out to come visit me! I look forward to all of us getting together for a group meeting soon!

Miriam, Amanda tried to see you too but you must of gone in for surgery already! I KNOW your going to do GREAT today! Wished we could have met, but eventually it will happen! Good luck, walk ALOT, like everyone said! I really does help! My thoughts and prayers are with you! Let us know how you feel as soon as you can!

CHRIS, YOUR NEXT!!! Actually, I think there were one or two others that joined this board that may be next....I'm sorry if I missed you guys! I can't keep track of all of us anymore! But my thoughts are prayers are with ALL of you!!! You will all be FINE....if I can do this, believe me, ANYONE can!!! Besides walking, make sure you use your breathing aparatus that they give you...this is very important so that your lungs stay strong and you don't get ammonia!

Thanks again, everyone, for all your thoughts and prayers! I means so much! I'm going to go and rest now...talk to you all soon!

Yay Fran.....you did it! Congrats!

Lisa wow, that went fast....I can't believe you are at the mushies already! I know how you feel, like you have had ENOUGH soup! But you know me, I caved-in 3 days early...so I am proud of you!

I hit a 52 pound weight loss as of today and I am ecstatic! Some weeks I lose one pound, this week I lost 4. But it really does average to about 2 pounds a week.

Chris- I should have gotten your cell phone number when we met. I would have to play it by ear about doing lunch this weekend. I would love to....but I have to see how my schedule goes. I have a tennis match on Saturday from 1 to 3 pm. And my son is coming home from college this weekend. I might eek out lunch on Sunday. Why don't you email me your phone number and if I can make it, I will call you. EMAIL address: stockpot23@aol.com

Have a great weekend all....and hello to everyone else!

Sue

Hey there,

I went for a BS with a major in Sonography, but there are 2 year programs out there. Just make sure they give you internships as part of the program. To become registered you need to have performed a certain number of exams and that's hard to do without an internship, and without hands on training vrtually no one will hire you. It is a great field. I did not like the whole radiation exposure thing that goes with x-ray....just a paranoia of mine. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Sue!!! Congratualtions!!! You are doing so well!

I have been at a standstill as far as the weightloss goes for a few weeks, but I have started excersizing!!! Yipee for me!! I have been getting up and getting on the treadmill every morning. I find I have so much energy in the mornings now.....It's an amazing high.

I can't do it in the evenings because the kids drive me nuts, but for now the mornings will suffice. I have to thank you and Amanda for the push in the excersize direction!....I actually ran today!!! *Can you tell I'm excited?*

Take care and keep up the great work!

I have a appointment for a fill on Tuesday. I can't wait to hear what they have to say as far as my tummy issues, but also need a fill.

Hi everyone, I fell off the face of the earth for a while...sorry. Surgery went well and boy am I glad thats over.

Fran, I am glad you are doing so great. I was quite uncomfortable for a week but I am back to work now.( I am not real good with pain...lol)

I still have some left upper abdominal pain and have a hard time sitting at my desk but all in all feeling pretty good. I am down 16 pounds since beginning pre-op. I cant wait to eat...actually to be more specific...I can;t wait to have an EGG!

I am so tired of shakes and fliuds. I cant even stand the smell of the shakes now. 3 more days to go...

I do continue to have some weakness and get tired easily. I am sure thats from not taking enough Protein or calories in. I hope it all improves after i start eating a bit on Weds.

I hope everyone is well.

Good luck Chris.

Hi everyone, I'm back!

Fran - I'm so glad you got through your surgery with flying colors! Too bad we didnt get to meet up beforehand, but we will one day!

Amanda - thank you SO much for thinking of me and trying to see me in the hospital :-) Words can't describe how much that means to me!

My surgery went well, but I had some complications afterwards, so I spent an extra day in the hospital. I have vaso-vagal syncapoe (basically my blood pressure gets WAY too low sometimes, and makes me pass out). The morning after surgery (7am - ugh) they took me down to do the video esophogram, and I really still wasnt feeling very well from the anesthesia/pain meds/lack of sleep. Well when I stood up into the machiene, I instantly felt like I was going to pass out - told the nurse that was there, and she said "wow, you sure are pale!". Duh. Well she was able to get a chair underneath me, and out I went. My blood pressure just got way too low (85/40 by the time they took it) but eventually I was ok by the afternoon. That little episode of course cost me another wonderful day in the hospital.

The first like 2 days home were pretty rough for me - has anyone else experience trouble urinating? It felt like my bladder was super full, and then I'd start to go, but then my bladder would just seize up and stop. That by far was the worst pain for me, but thankfully it stopped by Monday night. I'm guessing it was from the gas, the catheter - a lot of different things, but thankfully it's all better now!

I still have some gas, but not too bad. I'm really trying hard to get up and walk around as much as possible. The only site of the inscions that hurts is around the port, but I agree that keeping an ice pack on it REALLY helps. And honestly, the pain from the inscions/port is no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Right now I'm really trying hard to get in more calories/protein. I have NO appetite whatsoever, but I'm really trying to force myself because I know I need the Protein to heal. Oh, and if anyone is looking for a good Protein Powder - I ordered the unjury powder online, and the chocolate one is AWESOME. I had also tried the Designer whey, and that sucked lol.

Each day gets a little bit better, so yay! The only bad thing is that I cant stop fantasizing about eggs LOL. I can't WAIT to eat mushies!!!!

It is so great to hear that all of you have come through with great success and for the most part with very little pain.

I can't believe that I get my band next week. I started liquids to day. It wasn't that bad but i am worried about being home all weekend. I think it will be challenging.

I just want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a great weekend.

Miriam

when I was up in recovery looking for Fran I think I saw you. Were you the first bed by the door?

I glad you're feeling better. Unjury is the best shake mix I found and believe me I tried a lot.

I liked adding a flavor extract like almond or coconut to the chocolate. Yum.

Hang in there Chris. After a while I wasn't hungry.

Miriam, Glad to hear you are doing better. I have heard from someone I know they had similar urinary issues. It passed quickly she said. btw I also had egg fantasies!

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! I had a delicious turkey dinner the size of a deck of cards and couldnt feel any better! I appreciated every bite!

fran, I hope you are doing well!

best to all

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
