ABC September Chat

Recommended Posts

Well ABC (August Band Crew) members we have made it to the end of our banding month. Each and every member has been very supportive during our procedures and the post-op period, but now is when we will REALLY need to lean on each other for support more than ever. Now the real work of working the band begins and I am sure we will all run into a hurdle or two or three (you get the point) along the continued journey. So, here we go!

Please post your short term weight loss goal for October 1st. I think little goals are where we should start for now so we don't get too overwhelmed.

:gluck: and :D to all.

Losin' it--thanks for starting the thread!:biggrin1:

Since I know I will start gaining when I start on solids I am going to be cautious on my goal---

I would like to lose 10 pounds by October 1st.

I will be (I know I can, I know I can, I know I can) at 190lbs.

It is funny how time changes perspective. Last Friday I was 206 and I have been that weight all this week. Last week I thought I should wait to have my fill and not do it on 9/11. This week I realized that as the swelling decreases my appetite is returning full force and food is much easier to digest. I am eating faster, eating more, and losing zero. It is frustrating but part of the process. I guess in a way it gives me a little break from the process before my first fill. The sense I get is that you almost start over again with liquids, mushy food, and testing what you can eat after the fill. If that is the case then the weight should continue to come off. When are the other early August bandsters going for their first fill?

Hey you guys, I'm worried about Surby! She hasn't been around since telling us about her uncontrollable nausea - if you're out there please let us know how you're doing!!!!

I had my first PB yesterday. I was working a very busy shift and had about 20 minutes for lunch. I nuked my mushies and dug in. It was overcooked mac and cheese and some canned chicken breast (which I didn't think was a mushy but is on our list of mushy foods from the doc). I apparently didn't chew well enough because with my first bite I got an immediate sense of golf ball, I ran to the bathroom and urp - up comes a bunch of slimy clear saliva and a tiny piece of chicken! No mac and cheese or sign of anything else that was in my first bite. I felt immediate relief and then I noticed that my stomach felt a little achy. I ate just the mac and cheese and chewed it really well but I couldn't finish it - I was too full. Just the day before I ate the same thing with no problem at all and ate the entire serving. I ate some Soup when I got home about 8:30 last night and I think I'll stick to liquids today just to be on the safe side. I'm hoping I didn't do any damage and I guess that invincable feeling of being able to eat "anything" was just a farce! The band is a fickle thing!

Anyhoo - I would like to lose to 240 by October 1st. That's 14 lbs and it might be a bit lofty but man, I've been stuck at 254 for so many days I figure I'll have to see a drop soon!

I love the idea of a monthly goal and what a great way for all of us to keep in touch. Take care and I look forward to all of us being super successful!

I'm in! Although now I have to remember to check this forum for our thread, not the other one!

I want to lose 10 pounds by October 1 and be able to fit into the jeans in my closet! :) I'm sooooo close. I didn't lose anything this week and it's frustrating. I know this isn't going to be easy, but with as little as we eat, you'd think I'd have lost something! I'd lost 2 lbs earlier this week, but when I started pureed, gained it back so it's a wash for the week. I'm hoping I'll lose at least 2 next week.

So it seems many of us have hit a post op surgery weight loss plateau. I wonder why. I am still eating far less calories then before. I cut out any exercies that would increase muscle mass, and only work on exercises that burn calories and yet the scale won't move. I have been integrating soft foods like cooked chicken and ground meat into my diet for the last 2 weeks or so but I was still losing last week. What happened this week? Is this normal before the first fill?

I also am bouncing around the same 3 pounds between 374 and 372. It's frustrating and I'm eating quite a bit. I can hardly wait for my first fill but it's not scheduled until 10-3.

My goal for the next month is 10 pounds. I hope to be 363 by Oct 1st. I think that means a lot of excersise! hehehe. LETS GO ABC!!!!!!!! I love you guys! We're all losers!!! WOO HOO!

Well, I've discovered where all the weight I have lost has come from. Apparently I'm losing weight in my boobs! My bras are driving me nuts they are riding up, straps falling down, and the cups are way too big all of a sudden. That's the one place I didn't really want to loose weight. I never thought the first new item of clothing I'd need to buy would be a freakin' BRA!! :)

My goal for October 1st is to lose 10 lbs. I was 248 when I decided to have surgery and 238 on surgery day. I've been bouncing around with the same pound since Sunday now (229-230). I really don't understand why since I've been having no more than 600-700 calories a day. Still on liquids, but have added in a bit of cottage cheese. I know if I exercised it would help, but I came down with Shingles this week and am in a lot of pain. Dr. said it was probably the stress from surgery that brought it out. I guess exercise will have to wait. :)

Whew!! I found you guys! I'd be lost without you.

Okay my goal is also to lose 10 pounds by October 1st. I was stalled with my weight loss for almost this whole week too. Don't know why though. I know my band wasn't filled yet but I was definitely eating less than I normally would.

RLittman, I noticed my appetite increasing as well. I say "go for the fill!!!" Actually I just got my first fill today. I asked my doctor why he schedules them so early and I had to laugh at his response. "You want to lose weight, right? Well, then let's do it." Can't argue with that logic.:) I forgot to ask how much he put in. I had to get up at 5 am and drive 1 1/2 hours to get there, I was so tired, I hardly spoke. BTW, fills are a piece of cake. Mmmmm, cake! LOL!!!

I'm also a bit concerned...Surby!!! Please check in with us!!!

Well, August Bandsters we're moving on to phase 2 together!!!:clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Well, I'm going on vacation in September, and should have a fill on September 20. So if I can drop 5 to 8 pounds, I'll be doing ok. I walked 1.21 miles yesterday according to my pedometer. DH has been great at helping me remember to walk. (I'm channeling his nagging tendencies into that because it's something I really want to do.)

I'm supposed to still be on pureed foods until week 6. I'm having a problem with dinners. I'm doing the high Protein shake for Breakfast, yogurt or shake for lunch, but dinner is a challenge. What are y'all doing for dinners in the mushy stage?

Also, I've been STUCK for over a week at exactly 20 pounds down from my preop visit. )And that's 2 pounds up from 2 weeks out.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG???

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
