Surgery was Monday- came home Tuesday night. Since I have been home I have only had 2 Popsicles ( one yesterday and one today) and only sips of water.. I have not been able to get thru half a 16 ounce bottle of Water since I been home. I just feel nausous everytime I start to sip on my water. Is this normal?

Yes it's normal. Your stomach is still tender and healing and recovering from a major trauma. If the Water is real cold and bothering you you may want to try warm or room tempature Water, that helped me. I couldn't stand cold water the first few days after surgery and my stomach seemed to flip out when I tried drinking any.

Hope you're feeling better soon

I mixed apple juice and Water together instead of plain ole water. It was room temp too! I've actually hear of people setting an alarm or timer and take a sip every 5 minutes in the beginning just to make sure they dont dehydrate! SIP, SIP, SIP.....IT WILL GET EASIER!!!

For the first few weeks after surgery, I had to have room temperature Water or even a little warmer. I also had to mix it with crystal light or Unjury strawberry Sorbet, because I couldn't handle just plain water. I also used Unjury chicken Soup or broth to get my fluids in. It is VERY important that you get as many fluids in as you can throughout the day to avoid being back in the hospital with dehydration! You might not be able to get 64 ounces right away, but you definitely need more than 16!! Remember that everything you have - broth, popsicles, Jello, crystal light, Isopure or other clear Protein Drinks - all count toward your goal for fluids. Even if you just take a small sip every few minutes you should be able to get in more than 16 ounces through the day. Some people do struggle more than others at the beginning, but it is really important to try to increase it as much as you can each day to avoid dehydration!

As the others said, very cold Water is especially difficult to get down, room temperature works much better. I know it is difficult, and believe me, I also understand the feeling nauseous part, but you will feel much, much worse if you do not force yourself to drink water. Naturally, you won't be able to and should not be taking big gulps, but you should keep water by you at all times and sip, sip, sip as much as possible. Keeping hydrated is vital to your health and healing. Take this advice from someone (me) who had the same problem and ended up in the hospital on IV's with severe dehydration and UTI's three times after my surgery simply because I didn't force myself to drink.

Just a spin on it- I was completely opposite~ I drink everything with crushed ice packed in! I could not stand room temp anything - plus the ice dilutes my drink- and I get more Water that way too <3

I was just sleeved yesterday June 19th. I am drinking cold Water, crystal light, and propel zero. I haven't had any nausea yet.

Is this normal?

You need to drink more and get some anti nausea medicine if needed. You should be getting 20-30 oz a day minimum. I was getting 25 and still ended up dehydrated and in the hospital at 8 days post op after I nearly passed out. You need fluids!

You can ask for anti-nausea medication to get you through this. Just keep trying to sip, sip, sip. Warm broth was very comforting to me in the beginning, and chai tea. Try using different temperatures to see what goes down easier.

I didn't read through the other replies, so i'm sorry if i'm repeating anything.

Yes, it is normal to regular Water to bug your stomach. There are days even now for me (i'm 9 months out) where I just can't do plain water. HOWEVER... you HAVE to get your fluids up! That is the most important thing right now. You said you are only getting in about 8 oz a day? That is really not so good.

Try warm liquids. broth, bouillon, etc. They went down considerably better for me. Cold water kinda shocks your body so it could also be why popsicles aren't sitting that well. You could try using a candle warmer to keep it warm while you sip it. The other thing that helped me were straws. I know many people are told not to, I was told it was fine. While I was home, the straw was pretty much attached to my mouth. I was sipping such small amounts that it seemed like I wasn't drinking any, but it worked! And day by day I could drink a bit more. I aimed for an ounce every 10 minutes. That is 6 an hour, so if I do that for 10 hours I get a min of 60 in. That also gave me a tiny bit of wiggle room. It is really tough when water doesn't go down well, but you will work through it!

Good luck!!

What my husband found for me and it kept me from being dehydrated was grape pedialyte mixed with equal amounts of Welchs grape juice. I could keep it down and it tasted great. I couldn't eat SF popcycles. SF anything makes me nauseaous. It will get better, I promise.

I forgot about the SF thing... but that happened with me as well! For a long time anything SF was horrible on my stomach!! Sometimes I couldnt even handle Powerade zero.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
