Left Side Pain And Acid Reflux

Recommended Posts

I'm 15 days out today and just started three week soft foods. I've been having problems getting in all of my Protein since I had surgery. Yesterday, I thought I was doing awesome but today I'm having acid reflux so much more. I'm on Previcid 30 mg which the Dr. prescribed but before the surgery I was on Prilosec 20 mg a day. I don't think the Previcid is working! Also, the last two days my left side has been hurting a lot. I thought maybe I pulled the muscle or something. It hurts really bad when I lay down. Kinda goes around from the back to the front right under the ribs on the left side. Any ideas anyone of why this is happening? I called the nurse and she is yet to call me back. I'm so surprised!! NOT!

Thanks guys!

Ask the doctor about switching to the prevacid if it works better for you. As for the pain, it's somewhat normal. There are some stitches in there and they may be pulling a little as it heals. You're early post-op, so it may be difficult to get the Protein in...just keep trying, it will happen. :)

Any time that you eat something that doesn't agree with you, it's a good idea to drop back a stage for a day before trying that food again. One question: Did you have any dairy products yesterday? I became lactose intolerant after surgery. I'm just now getting to where I can enjoy a little milk-based dairy again.

You're doing great!

Thank you Lissa! I guess I've had milk based shakes all along and I've been eating yogurt without problem. On my three week diet, the foods list is mashed potatoes, eggs, cheese spread, chees sticks, and nut butters. I'm not sure my sleeve is ready for it. I ate an egg and half a slice of cheese this morning. Went down well but now the acid reflux is horrible. I do love eggs though!

Lisa, Leave out the cheese later and see if the reflux improves. My bet is that the dairy isn't liking you right now. :) Wouldn't that be great if it solved the issue? Here's hoping! :)

I have been experiencing the same thing, so took advice and thought it was lactose. so got all the lactose free stuff, but still have odd sharp pains every now and again, so thought is was trapped gas still,, so went on de gas , which definatly helped, but then last couple days came back, so after evaluating what i was eating and drinking have come to the conclusion that SUGAR is doing it for me.. i am fine till I have a hot sustagen or cup of tea,, even tho I only have a little bit in ,,have cut down alot of sugars in my tea since surgery , so thing will have to cut it all out in future... so no sugar and de-gas works for me ..

I hope your back is better. I had similar symptoms. Worse when I laid down and it would throb. I couldn't tell if it was a pulled muscle or a kidney stone or what so I went to my Pcp once I couldn't stand the pain any longer . I have chest wall syndrome which is common after any major surgery and can effect any part of your core area. It takes a while to heal from. I feel sore in that same area but better everyday. If the pain gets worse get it checked!

I used a heating pad last night and it helped. :) I still have the pain today but I'm going to continue to use the pad. I slept better last night. Thanks everyone for your input! Love you guys!

Heat helped mine too. If u have what I have all the doc does is give a script for pain mess and tell u it will go away eventually so using the heat should work. Also, if it hurts to breath in deep, I was told to do deep breathing as much as I could because of the risk of pneumonia from having surgery and breathing shallow constantly. Good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
