Does Removing The Drain Hurt

Recommended Posts

Don't lie to me. I get it removed monday. I'm so excited to sleep on my belly.

Don't get too excited. I seriously doubt your belly is going to feel like being slept upon! I am still a bit sore.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a drain?

A drain is a like a catheter that is out in your stomach area on your belly kind of like an IV in one of your laparoscopic incisions. It has a collapsible bulblike rubber ball than fills up with the drainage from your surgery. The liquid look like the color of blush wine, and you need to empty it about twice a day. i had mine removed a week after my surgery. It prevents the Fluid drainage from going back inot your stomach and body and prevents any infection. I didn't even know he took mine out until he held it up and showed it to me.

My drain was very sore. It took three tugs and all three took my breath away. Not do much pain but what a relief to have it out!!

Ah! Thank you! That's the great thing about this site- I didn't even know about this!

JenniJune ... Not all doctors use drains. When i read about them here, i asked my doctor at my pre-op appointment ((i compiled a list of questions from conversations here)) and he told me, "no, he did not use them."

My dr took my drain out before I left the hospital it did not hurt just weird but it came out so fast. I am glad I did not have to go home with it

Mine hurt too :-( The good news is, it takes seconds for it to be removed and once it's out the pain is over. My dr did it so fast it almost felt like I was being punched in the gut. I made this animal type grunt sound and then it was over! It may take a little while before you can sleep on your stomach but it wont be much longer!

Mine only had to stay in 2 days. I got mine out a day before I left the hospital.

I was surprised when I woke up from surgery with one. I didn't even think to ask about it at pre appointment ...

The good news it it doesn't last forever...lol

I had my drain for a week and it was terribly painful for me to have it removed. It was quick so that was a relief! My dr warned me that it would be painful though so at least I was warned!

Mine didn't hurt at all to remove. But Im seeing people talk about having their drains for a week or more! Mine was only the few days that I was in the hospital. I guess the only this that hurt a little bit was my PA cutting the stitches Round the drain hole in my belly, but my stitches she said were very tight. But even then it wasn't that bad.

I never got a drain..I'm wondering if that's a good or bad thing?

It's not good or bad. I had the lap band put in an taken out three times prior to this. He did this so my staples heal properly. I'm a very risky case and my chances of a leak are very very high.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
