I am 9.5 months out and a few of mine are raised on the right side. The left ones are flat and pencil thin. the others look like little red grub worms.. yuck. I am hoping they start to fade like the doc says they will. He said they were normal. I guess I dont heal as pretty as others do. Im still waiting on them to fade and be flat.

When was the last time your doctor looked at them? Might not hurt to have them looked at.

I am almost 9 months post-op and my incisions are still res and raised...

DallasMom

Are you going to be seeing your dr. soon? Regardless, i would call him sooner than later. Having incision still being red, IMO doesn't sound great, you should check it out.

I'm sure you will be fine, just check it out with the doc. Never be afraid to talk to the doc if you have any problem/question - he is there for you - always

best

I son't scare well and most anytime I have an incision of some sort it ends up raised and red. But Vitamin E oil helps diminish the scare. You just rub it on the scar a couple of times a day. Give it a try. :-)

I have one that is raised, but I hate to admit this ... I kinda pick at it. I know ... gross ... but, we try to be truthful here as it may help someone else.

I'm a picker, though. Scabs, fingernails ... drives my wife nuts. I should just put some ointment and a bandaid on it and leave it so it can heal, but ...

All my surgical scars stay red for about a year or more. Eventually they turn white but it takes a while. VSG scars are no different - still red.

All 5 of mine are flat except for the biggest one where they took the excess tummy out but they are still darker, not so much red, where the incision is. I am 3 1/2 months out. The other 4 are almost non existent now but I am a fast healer.

These are called keloids. Some people are more susceptible to them than others. You should go to the dermatologist office early so they can give you cortisone shots to bring down the inflammation while the tissue is still soft.

What about Mederma?

Mederma helps with the discoloration ( not much from my experience) but usually only if youre diligent about it and the scar is new. Trust me ive had a keloid since i was 13. Im 24 now. I didnt try to do anything til i was probable 16. And it grew!! If u wear anything that irritates that scar it will grow and protect it from sunlight. If ur wearing a bathing suit get gooood sunblock. You can also purchase pressure bandages from the pharmacy.. Kinda expensive and they help smooth out the scar but again, diligence. If you get cortisone shots, you must try to get them every week! Many doctors will not cut out the keloid because for 90% of people, if you have one, you are a keloid former and the scar may just come back bigger and angrier! One plastic surgeon wanted to try cutting it out and then doing radiation to stop the skin cell growth (keloids are when your skin believes it needs to grow more tissue to help you heal but doesnt know when to stop), i know it sounds radical but can you guys imagaine.. I have one huggge one right below my clavicle in the DEAD center of my chest!!!!! Soooo believe meeee buddies.... I will try everything!! My keloid started out as probable 1 cm... It is now 3 x 4 cm now. I have this complex now about it???? when people meet me, they immediately look at my chest n then back at my eyes trying to seem as tho they didnt just give my keloid a second glance thinking "what the hell is that?!" as you can see i know bout these scars so if you guys have any questions pls dont hesitate to ask☺

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
