Dear K33, don't let my set back or anyone'en set back stop you from doing something that can give you your life back. I can't speak for everyone, but if you don't use the tool properly it will not work, and that was my mistake. I was eating and drinking all the wrong things. This is a lifestyle change and not a miracle surgery it takes hard work dedication. (something I was not doing which led me to my temppeary hiccup.) I did not post my set back to discourage anyone. Like all my fellow slevers said 39 lbs is a victory and with their advice it helped me to remember that. That's why we post to help one another. Regardless if I ever meet my goal weight, the VSG was the best thing I ever did. I should mention that I was diabetic type 2 and now I am not. There are many reasons why I wanted the VSG, mostly I wanted to be able to move around and enjoy life with my kids without feeling tired and fat all the time. I am not saying it is easy, (diets are easy) it is hard work but you can do it and will not regret it if you do. And if your ever in a slump just go on here and they will put you back on track, like they did for me. Btw Today is 8 lbs gone since last Monday. Back in my way.

About the knee pain, I have a lot of pain in my body from nerve damage and what I learned was to exercise in water! I go the to pool and walk and do all sorts of work out you can even get wts to train with in the water... no pain...love it!

Aloha Skinnyagain (and also to K33)

First, I think this was a great post to read so thank you for posting it......it shows the support of this forum and reminded me that this isn't a free ride. I personally felt that dieting was HELL and this has, not been easy, but so much more effective that I sometimes forget that even though I eat small amounts, I still need to eat healthy.

As for K33, this surgery is a very personal decision, but do keep in mind the possible downsides of the surgery to me, are far less than the risks of being and staying overweight.

Congrats Skinnyagain on getting back on track and being strong.....love this forum.

  • Good for you for realizing your downfalls and getting back on the right track. Everyone here supports you and is wishing you the best. Since I am a sucker for motivational quotes I thought this one appropriate...

OMG! Skinnyagain, I feel the same way! I'm a year and few weeks out and have only lost 50lbs... I was 230 and I'm 180... I'm getting tired, but I'm not giving up... I'm also going to go back to my basics... it's like when I start eating sweets, I can't stop....

You can do this, and be 100% successful, but you must do what we know we are suppose to do. I don't know about the cokes stretching our new little tummies. Tiffikns seems to do fine with them.....but according to almost every single doctor, they are off limits, if for no other reason than they are empty calories or As a gym teacher use to say to her girls....just paste it on your hips.

Protein, protein!! at 23 months out, I still weigh and measure my food when I'm home. Hang in there, you have a great tool, use it to it's fullest extent

I am one year and 2 months out. I must say it has not been very good for me.I started this journey at 210 lbs and now weigh 171 lbs. That is only a 39 lb weight loss in a year. To me this is a FAIL...I will say that 6 months post op I took a drink of a soda for the first time and missed it so I started drinking them again. I knew it was a no, no but was never really told why. I have since found out that the carbination will expand your pouch and it will NOT shrink back to the small size it was. So you can bet I have not had a soda since. I have been frustrated since about 2 months out. I never really felt restriction, although I can not eat as much as I could, I can eat way more than 6-8 oz. Which is what they told me my max would be 6 oz. I do feel like I have kinda given up. I stopped working out and started to eat whatever about 2 months ago, after my 1 year follow up. I have since gained 8 lbs. So on Monday I deceided to go back to 2 shakes a day and 1 low cal, low fat high Protein meal and lost 7 lbs. But I should be down at least 50+ pounds by now per my DR. My goal weight is 130, and I really really want to get there. I spent way to much money, blood, sweat and tears to only loose 39 lbs and not get my life back. If anything I feel worse. I have such horrible pain in both my knees that started 4 months post op, and on some days I can hardly walk. (which has been part of the lack in exercise). If there is anyone out there who has had trouble from day one or not, that might have some words of encouragment or a better way to make this work I am all ears. I hate to sound like a cry baby, but I am desperate.

It does not have to happen to you.....When I went to the seminar, they said this was to give us a way of life, where we never have to diet again. That's well and fine, but until I reached goal, I treated this as THE most important diet of my life....and since I had forced Portion Control, no hunger, true motivation etc.....it was NOT difficult at all. My daughter popped two yogurt covered cheerios in my mouth to try before I reached goal, neither of us were thinking. The minute I tasted 'sweet' - they came out like I'd taken a drink of sour milk! I mean I was a straight arrow!!!! My nurse said I was 'rigid' and followed that up with.....'it works for you'. I reached goal in just under five months. Slowly but surely I started tip toeing into eating like a real person. Now I think I eat like a naturally think person. Life is good. Good luck!!!

Oh gosh I'm sp afraid this will happen to me!!!!

I am APPALLED at the fact that your surgeon didn't see you for an entire YEAR. He made buckets of money off of you and can't be bothered to check in? How on earth is he measuring his success with his procedures? There are some things that can't be found in a med chart. Oh, I am so mad. I had surgery on 4/10 and have seen my surgeon 8 times since. 4 of those visits when I was put back in the hospital for some issues, but he visited every day, sometimes twice a day.

In about three weeks I'll be 2 years out. I was very strict with myself until I reached goal, but without hunger and the restriction.....this has seriously been the easiest thing I've ever set out to do and accomplished! I am still uncomfortable if I eat too much. I weigh every single day, when I'm home, I weigh and measure all my food. I use an on line program to keep track of Protein and calories. I seldom miss a day, at least not during the week. Saturday and Sundays are a little more hectic. Just to give you an idea of what I can eat at almost two years post op. Tonight I had 3 oz of chicken breast cooked in cream of mushroom Soup. 1/2 of a small new red potato, .125 cup of 1% cottage cheese and .125 cup of pork and Beans. To me this seems like a lot of food, compared to what I could eat a year ago, but when I think about what I use to eat and look at what other people eat.....it is very little. I use a salad plate, so a lot is visual!! Don't worry, this is a wonderful tool.....I haven't had one minute of buyer's remorse!! I love my sleeve!!

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am pre-op with 4# before I can get a date. Hearing what happens 2-3 years out causes me concern, too. In fact so much so I wonder if I will have the vsg surgery at all. Seems like a big sacrifice for uncertain benefits. Hope I don't put a damper on this post. Forgive me.

I am wondering if I have the stamina and patience for this marathon journey. Why did you want surgery in the first place?

You've gotten lots of good advice already. I just wanted to stop by and say hi to another patient of.Dr. Nicholson's. I'm preop still and although I've heard wonderful things about Dr. Nick and staff I have heard your complaint quite a bit and truthfully, it bothers me a bit that he isn't more involved. Though not enough to go elsewhere due to the fact he seems to be one of the "top dogs" in WLS. BTW, where do you live?

Best of luck to you in your journey!

~Amy

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
