QOTD - When did I decide to have WLS? It's kind of a long story but you asked. I am turning 52 on Aug 23rd. I first became aware that I was overweight at 8 yrs old, by the time I entered college I was 100 pounds overweight. When you are under 5 feet, it is not hard to do. I reached 200 pounds overweight about 5 years ago, and Christmas 2011 I peaked at 350 pounds. 350 pounds! I am less than 5 feet tall and weighed over two and a half times my ideal weight! During these years of struggle I had also tried many diets, and my most successful attempt was a liquid diet that lasted 10 months. I lost 130 pounds but I gained it back quicker than I lost it. I had been considering WLS for a long time but I was scared of the surgery, after all I had lost 130 pounds before, I could do it again. Bypass as you know has many long term issues so I never seriously considered it, plus my insurance did not cover it and I had no means to get financing. Last year I started working for a hospital where the benefits are awesome. I consulted a surgeon last year, but when I told him I wanted the sleeve, he said the RNY was what I needed. When I stepped out of the exam room, his nurse said she could "fast-track" me and I could have the surgery in 2 weeks. This scared the wits out of me!! I did not make another appointment, but told them I would call but I could not get out of there fast enough and no I didn't go back. Fast forward a year, on a friends recommendation I went to a new surgeon, who was just amazing and really took time with me. He agrees that the sleeve is the best procedure for me. The real reason is that aside from the fact that I am as big as a barn, both my parents died at the "young" age of 74 of heart related problems. 74... that means that if I don't do something fast, I will be lucky if I have 20 years left on this earth. My children are 20 and 23. I want to grow old to see their children and to be the best friend to my daughter that my mom was to me. August 2nd can't get here fast enough!!

Welcome all new comers! I will add you tomorrow to the list :)

I'm so stoked. I worked with my boyfriend today at a Vitamin store in the new castle mart, in delaware. A lady next door at one of the stores was helping me look at scrubs and she said what size do you wear? I said actually I'm not sure what im looking for because im having weight loss surgery in 2 weeks! It felt so good to say that, and she was super excited for me. She begged me to come back in after the surgery and keep her updated!

So, QOTD-----HOW MUCH TIME ARE YOU TAKING OFF FROM WORK? AND, IS ANYONE USING THE FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT (i'm trying to get info on it from work but the girl thats supposed to be helping me is dumb as dirt) .

I'll be almost 2 weeks out when I go back, I'm only doing "half days" ...which is 6 or 7 hours to me. Then I'm taking an extra full week off from my other patient....So I'll be 3 weeks out when I go back full time . I hope this is enough. My friend was going to take just the 2 weeks off but she decided to take more than that. (a couple weeks more)

I'm taking 2 weeks off from work and using my sick/vacation days. I considered using short term disability but then decided I might as well use my sick/vacation days because it will already be mid-August before I go back and I need to use up those days.

My surgery is on a Thursday and I am taking the all of the following week. My boss is freaking out over it. :) I work with a girl that was sleeved about a month ago. She was sleeved on a Friday and came back the following Monday. Not a good idea at all.

QOTD:

I'm a teacher, so I have 3 weeks off after surgery before I go back to work and 4 weeks before the kids come back to school. I teach kindergarten so I am nervous about keeping up my energy and getting in all my drinks/foods during the day...

***I start my liquid diet tomorrow, OMG.

Qotd. I am (and always do) work from home (community relations and philanthropy). That means that unless we blow something up or give something big away I don't actually need to work at all so I plan two weeks of not even turning on my computer (iPad here lol). If we do low something up the company pres can talk about it. :P

Officially I'm not working til sept 17 (surgery is the week of the 21st) and that's a dinner party which will be interesting. I think since I'm on liquids then that I will bartend instead of eating with guests.

I have hired a gal to be 40 hours with my six year old the first two weeks after surgery. For many of us "work" isn't a 9 to 5 thing so I felt that would be a good idea.

I am on the same schedule. Last day of summer school is August 14th. We go back 2 days before the students on September 3rd. I'm having my sleeve on August 20th, so I go back 2 weeks later. I would have had it done August 15th, but my dr ONU operates on Monday and Tuesday.

I teach special Ed middle schoolers. Kindergarten is tough. A lot of bending down to their level. Just remember nothing over ten lbs. at least you have a built in snack time during the day. I'll be sneaking in mine. I feel, like our eating schedule will be like a newborns. Every two hours.

Good luck.

I am having surgery on a Friday, and returning to work the following Wed. I do have a office job and I took less time than that with my laparoscopic hysterectomy so I am sure Ill be fine. I just sent my deposit and booked my flight, I am so ready! This will be the last time I will lose this weight.

August 6.... 15 days away!

I had a dream last night that I had my sleeve. It felt real! Crazy thing about is that my husband took me and brought me home and I didn't remember anything. In my dream when I woke up my abdomen was a little tender and I was thirsty and if I took a big drink it would hurt and cramp up going down.

Anyone else having any dreams?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
