mczoo33 got a reaction from germen in Have You Ever Pondered The Little Things Like A Spoon, How It Can Change Our Healthy DecisionsHave you ever pondered on that little things that can change so much in your life over time?
Well I was having my Soup tonight, I have always used a Tablespoon for Soups, cereals etc, Why? Well my grandfather did it. Well Why did he? cause he was older and shaky and it helped him get some to his mouth unlike a teaspoon he would loose most of it before it reached his mouth.
So I was thinking how so many things are like that that changes how we eat and don't even realize it.
The Bigger plates that we fill heaping at times. Bigger cups. Larger Serving sizes.
The fast food restaurant on most corners, so when your driving home from work and tired and still got to go home and make dinner, makes it easy to drive through and grab those fatty unhealthy choices for dinner.
The kitchen appliances that that grind and chop that we some times use for more convenience, yet burn less calories then chopping or preparing by hand.
The apple or potatoes peeler you pop in pop out, or make fries with and drop in a deep fat fryer that's faster then baking.
The bread machine that makes all that bread we love homemade. Yet don't have to need and work at, not much calories burned there.
The frying pan, with grease to fry supper fast instead of baking and heating up the house.
We live in a disposable world where we can throw away our dishes and to-go bags.
We have the dishwasher that helps cut our cleaning time (therefore less burning of calories).
We live a world of preservatives and more fat in foods.
My Grandfather had bacon, eggs, pancakes and toast with jelly every morning for Breakfast all his life, and lived on pork, beef and potatoes, and I don't know if I ever seen him eat a green salad. He had huge deserts or pie or cake or ice cream most nights for desert. He drank 2 six packs of real coke everyday. He was the skinniest man I knew at maybe 120 lbs for his 5 10 height.
The difference was he was a farmer, and he may have at all that for breakfast, but he was up and had feed the chickens and pigs, feed 100 head of cows, milked 2-6 cows, changed the Water in two or three fields, all before he had that breakfast.
Don't get me wrong, I am not wiling to give up many of life's pleasures in my life either, but we must put more responsible choices of talking a walk cause we have more time since that dishwasher is doing what would burn calories
We let the little things like a spoon in our lives become something that can change so much. I need to move back to the regular size spoon.
Pretty soon I will be told to use the baby spoon with my meals.
For me, its time to think about the little things like the spoon that I have allowed to get me off my path, change it, and get back on that path for a good healthy life

mczoo33 reacted to sr910 in Have You Ever Pondered The Little Things Like A Spoon, How It Can Change Our Healthy DecisionsHave you watched "Weight of the Nation?"
It was On Demand on HBO and it was really interesting to see America go from hungry and skinny from the early 1900s to the 1940s, then they showed the invention of the microwave and frozen meals in the 1950s, and we kind of spiraled out of control from there. My grandma grew up on a farm in Arkansas and I have photos from her childhood -- guess what -- EVERYONE IS SKINNY! I can't find a single fat person in any of her photos from the 1930s and 40s...
As convenient as technology is (don't get my wrong, I love my iPhone, dishwasher, etc.), things being more convenient has made people so lazy! What about those little vacuums that roll around by themselves?! Jeez...

mczoo33 reacted to Philly Yum in Have You Ever Pondered The Little Things Like A Spoon, How It Can Change Our Healthy DecisionsFunny you mentioned this. While I was on my liquid diet, stirring my hot cut of tea, I came up with the brightest idea ever. Why dont they make tiny spoons to stir your tea? A handy name would be a "tea spoon" ?? Oh wait..... is that why they call them that? Hmm.. Nevermind....

I wanted to tell all the August sleevers how proud I am of your choice to do VSG. For me personally it has been the best decision I have ever made. Although I had a low bmi (31) I was obese, I took 2 blood pressure pills that were very expensive. I have a rare liver disease so I can only take certain medications. My liver doctor told me that if I continue to gain weight it would compromise my chances of a liver transplant if I ever needed one. Wow! I was just shy of turning 50. Tried every single diet more than once. Even tried hypnosis. I excercised regularly. But I was always hungry, even after eating a large meal. The hunger monkey climbed onto my back in the last 5 years and just stayed there. Although I had fought with me my weight for the last 20 years there was a significant change in my hunger cues that became constant in the last 5. I have no idea why. So I looked into to Lapband and was not thrilled about the results. But fortunately during that research is when I learned about VSG. The first few weeks are tough at times but it has been so worth it in the end! You have begun the most brave and fantastic journey of your life! This tool WILL help you to succeed. It WILL NOT fail you if you stay on your doctor's reccomendations. Enjoy the journey...take progress pics (wish I would of done that)
Wishing you all the best of luck!!!!!!

mczoo33 reacted to MinaT in Alcohol And Non Compliant HusbandI can see what you are dealing with and my recommendation to you is something a bit different. You have control only over what you eat...and your son eats.
While you love your husband, it is up to him what he eats, what he drinks. Arguing with him has not helped as you have pointed out, being disgusted with him isn't helping, now it's time for you to let go of trying to control what he does and focus on you and your son. If you husband wants fried chicken, throwing it out, will only lead to more drama. Your sole responsibility is to your child and your health at this point.
I am almost 9 weeks out. I started the process in November 2011. Every month I lost 10 pounds before surgery on low carb, high Protein. I went through with the surgery, even after I lost 70 pounds. Right before surgery my father started talking to me about what I was eating, I explained it to him in detail. He has gone from 200 to 169. My son has lost 20 pounds, my husband has lost about 10 pounds (he's more resistant to my diet). Only my parents and husband and son knew about my surgery. Now my neighbors are dieting, my sister in law and brother are dieting, people that have seen me and asked what I have been doing I told and they looked at me while shoving chips & dip in their mouth previously, are all like NO WAY, now I'm going to be the fat one in the family.
Now everyone is on a health kick because they seen what bad shape I was in and truly, I look good now.
If you do not want your son to go through what you are going through, you need to take control of him only. Your husband will have to make that decision on his own. You continue cooking your healthy food, this is what you made for dinner, your husband has a choice of eating it or going to McDonalds, he has a choice of drinking alcohol or not, you do NOT have to stoop to his level and go back into your old ways. He has to change.
The more you nag him the more he will resent you. Ultimatums never work. Tell him you love him, tell him you want to see him healthy, and that when he's ready to change his eating, you will be there for him, but until then, you and your son will be eating healthy, and doing things that will benefit your health because you don't want your son to be an unhealthy adult. You love him, but the unhealthy stuff can't be around your son. If he needs food that is unhealthy, buy it just for himself because it's not part of your life anymore.
Stay strong for yourself and son, eventually your husband will come around and if not, you still have to work on being healthy for your son and yourself.

I love it when waiter looks at you sadly when you ask for a box after taking about 5 good bites.
I have gone completely health conscious and I tell people that fast food and things like regular ice cream do not taste good to me anymore. I make most of my food myself because salts, sugars and unhealthy fats in things makes them unpalatable.
I use olive oil and coconut oil and butter. I'm here to tell you that the so called government scientists and their insistance on cereals and grains for the largest portion of your diet are dead wrong. Eating good fats encourages weight loss and is good for you. I do not eat highly processed foods. I do not eat fast food. Sliced almonds in fruit Greek yogurt tastes exquisite unlike the full sugar and fat ice cream my daughter let me taste the other day.
When you change your lifestyle you get to experience fresh, natural food. Guess what? It's tastes better! I think our need to throw sugar into everything is killing us. Mix sugar with simple white flour and you have a recipe for death.
I hate to seem dramatic, but am I ever learning things. Tell them you can't stand the taste of junk food any longer.

mczoo33 got a reaction from amykins in Tired Of The "when Can You Have___ Again?" QuestionsWhat amazes me about peoples responses on this and what you cant eat or when, is the fact of how different they would look at it or treat it if you couldn't eat things because of a gallbladder removed, or an ulcer, or diabetes, but because its weight loss its a whole different attitude.
Our society has become about food, for entertainments, rewards, pleasure. Its not there simply for nourishment. We have in our society lost the emphasis on exercise and eating right, then when we take steps to control it or use something as a tool, its like we are ridiculed for it.
In a restaurant when your heavy people watch what your eating when your overweight, the same as at the grocery store whats in your cart, Society, We/I judge to much on perception and the cover or outside.
If people know we had the surgery they will still watch what we eat, or put in our cart. I believe there will always be the judgement, what we can do and control is not judge ourselves on so many things, and look out how we perceive and feel about ourselves and let that be what matters the most.
If we can get past the questions and past the stares we can look at things in a different lite. We are human and those things will matter and bother us. Many people act the way they do our of fear, and fear is brought on usually by not having knowledge. We need to help educate, love ourselves, and not let others thoughts be our self image of ourselves.

mczoo33 reacted to NurseJenn in Chicken GritsI don't know if this is common... But it's something I whipped up pre-op, fell in love with (it's one of my all time comfort foods)... And just fell back in love with it today.
Super simple... Make grits (I use 3 Minute Grits) in chicken broth. I use Better Than Bouillion because I can add a bit more and get an amazing chicken flavor.
I'm day 12. Already on purée/soft foods. Fantabulous. I think next time I make it I'll make them a little watery and throw in some protein powder to amp up the protein. Yummy!!!!!

mczoo33 reacted to KristieAtkinson in Anyone Try Liquid Protein? When I struggle to get Protein in, I choke down a half a tube of these. They sell them at Wal Mart.
I only do 1/2 cuz your body can not process more than 30 protein at a time. Any extra I passed out of the body.
They are sour, but small so it's easier to get down. Watch the other brands cuz they can have less protein & you will have to drink the whole shot to get the same content as 1/2 a New whey.

It can stay like that for quite a while too.....and then I drop quite a few pounds.
Every time I restart the exercising thing I stall for longer than 10 days....not a .1 down,nothing.
Do what you say you are doing and the weight will come off....be patient.

mczoo33 reacted to Izuri in Whats Wrong With Me?6 weeks. 20 pounds. You are doing GREAT. Stop second guessing your body. You didn't gain a pound a day, you're not gonna lose a pound a day. In fact, healthy weight loss is often defined as around 2 pounds a week. That would put you at 12 pounds for 6 weeks. You should stop comparing your weight loss to others and start to enjoy it, you are doing well! 20 pounds is 20 pounds is 20 pounds. That's a small kid! A small dog! 2 cats! Why would you throw in the towel when you're SUCCESSFUL?
I know it's hard that the scale isn't moving by TONS each week, but at least this way you will have a lower chance of loose skin. It's healthy to lose slow too!

mczoo33 reacted to PdxMan in Cooking Smaller Amounts..?Yes, you
Sure you can. I take the jar to work and by the time lunch rolls around, it is thawed enough to pour into a bowl or on a plate, toss in the microwave and it's good to go.
You can also just take the ring and lid off and microwave it in the jar as well. It is glass, so, no problem doing that, either.

I am talking about even people who saw me during the journey - someone I saw just 2 months ago walked right by me not recognizing me. My good friend keeps doing double takes! I guess I really DO look different. She tells me that there is no way i still have 40-45# left to lose - well, I really do, but it still made me feel good!
-Size 16 (no W!!) instead of 26W or whatever I could cram myself into
-Comparable size to many of the women i know, even though I still have more to lose
-People are INVITING me to ride their horses! Offers I would have never gotten before. I am a good rider, it is just I was so dang huge!
-I can crawl in and out of the bed of my truck (hooking up the gooseneck hitch!). Could not have done that 6 months ago
-I no longer feel like I am made of glass and could break with the slightest stumble or fall.
-I can run, keep up with my dogs, horses etc.
Living the life I want - this is the dream!
So, the weird thing for me recently is clothes shopping. I feel like an intruder in the regular sizes section... like I will be tossed out when somebody discovers I snuck in...lol. I can't seem to find clothes that i like though, it is weird, it looks to me like the cute stuff is int he plus sizes. What the heck is wrong with me??? lol. i don't think I have any danger of becoming shopping obsessed.

I feel better and love it when people notice. I've gone from size 22/20 to size 16/14
