So I'm 4 months out and at about 2 1/2 months my hair started to fall out and I mean hand fulls at a time everytime I showered or ran my figures threw it :-( needless to say I was upset even though I was warned by my doctor that it would happen and nothing I could do would stop it from falling out. So my question is has anyone used NIOXIN? Does it work?? What things have u used to help regrow healthy hair?? I just cut my shoulder length hair to a pixie cut so I wouldn't see so much falling out. Also anyone have a clue when it will stop??? Any info would be AWESOME :-)

Thanks

And FYI I'm down 65 lbs

There are a TON of threads on this topic. In the upper right hand corner of the web page is a search box. Do a search for hair Loss.

I believe it is nutritionally related and it is very difficult to prevent. I was getting in all my Protein, liquids and Vitamins but still had Hair loss from months 5 through 8. It has just recently stopped falling out.

From my research, there is nothing to actually help regrow hair when the cause has been dramatic weight loss. We just have to ride it out. It will grow back. An option may be to research conditioners which make the hair you do have fuller and healthier.

Good luck and please post any research or discoveries.

I use nioxin because of Hair loss due to pcos. I feel that it helps, it is pricey but I do continue to use it. I feel it has helped me with my Hair growth.< /p>

It generally starts around 3 mos and lasts 2 - 4 mos (just general numbers).

Some people use Nioxin and claim results. Nioxin got noticed through results with chemotherapy patients, IIRC. But their hairloss, and ours, are from completely different root causes, and I've not seen any research that it actually helps in either case. If you understand why our hair is falling out, and how it's related to the lifecycle of hair, then it makes sense that no topical treatment will make any difference.

You'll also hear people talking about Biotin. There's some research indicating Biotin might help a little with detering (not preventing) natural hairloss. Again, I've never seen it actually make a difference in a case of WLS.

It's all so silly. I see/hear so many people taking fewer showers because they think the shower is making more hair fall out. The hair's already out, or on its way out. The Water is just pulling it out, or "lubricating" it. Same with when you condition. Wetting your hair will not make it fall out if it would have otherwise stayed in.

My NUT recommend a month of Zinc when mine started falling out at 2 1/2 months. I've only been on it for 3 weeks do I dunno if it's really helping but zinc is another Vitamin we don't get enough of so it can't hurt if you take the proper dose.

has anyone gone bald :). I know alot of people on here think it is silly to worry about Hair loss when we are gaining back control of our lives and health, but I am one of those people who is kind of concerned about losing my hair. I know there is nothing I can do to stop it, but I am wondering how much hair I will lose. My Dr. said since I have alot of hair, probably I will be the only one that notices. Hope that is the case

I don't think it's silly to worry about hairloss (I DO think it's silly to worry about surgery scars, tho!) Hell, my initial fatloss & hormone influx made me break out like a teenager, and I completely avoided going out for a few days because of a "few" pimples on my chin.

I don't know of anyone who has gone bald (that's about 8 yrs on WLS messageboards and having met probably around 200 WLS patients). Well, who wasn't already bald, anyway. :) I do know several people who thinned enough to have noticeable bare spots, where you could see the scalp through the hair.

I lost hair for about 6 weeks when I had my band. I lost a LOT ot first, and then it tapered off. At the time my hair was about to my waist, so even just a little hair looked like handfulls. Now my hair is above my shoulders, so hopefully I won't have the same shock this time around. I did lose quite a bit of hair, but I have pretty thick hair to start with (I used to get it thinned when it was longer). But I'm having a much harder time meeting dietary requirements this time around. With my band, even super restriction never took 4 hrs to get in a Protein drink. So who knows what will happen this time around.

I've started to feel like an animal shedding comic! It started about a week ago, maybe a little more so perhaps 3.5 months out. I have fine hair and not tons of it to begin with so I sucked it up and bought one of the Nioxin (sp?) systems. I'll see how it goes with that but I think all it will help with is making what I have look a little thicker and hopefully improving the regrowth. The final step has sunscreen in it of all things but I have burned my scalp a couple times in recent years. As fast as the hair grows on my legs after I wax it off I can't imagine why it takes my head so long!! =)

(sorry guys - TMI on the waxing, I know)

I dont think it is silly to worry about Hair loss either. My hair was the one thing i have always loved about myself, it upsets me when its coming out by the handful. My stylist told me, you didnt think you were gonna get to be a skinny b!tch with awesome hair did you? hahaha i told her yeah i kinda did. Its been favving out for about 6 weeks now so hopefully im halfway done. I have no bald spots but i can see some thinning when its wet. I use BIG FAT HAIR and and another collagen based hair styler.

I am taking Biotin and silica because it is suppose to be for hair regrowth and nail. I have so much hair growing from where I prefer it not to grow and my hair dresser told me my hair is growing back. So I'm smiling now :).

My hair is very thin to begin with. I bought a wig for the future. I cannot wait to have the surgery and get control over my life. To me, even if I went bald, I'd still be healthy after all is said and done.

Thanks everyone for your input!!! I had really thick hair and it has gotten really thin that's why I decided to cut it so short. I have been taking Biotin for about 6 months now and my nails are awesome! And I've noticed new hair growing in that's another reason why I cut it so it could all be the same length. I just started the nixion, so we will see how that goes!!

Thanks for all the support my fellow sleevers and keep up the positive attitudes we will get where we want to be one step at a time!! Eyes on the path and you will get to your goal!

Much luv :-)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
