The Carbonation Delimma

Recommended Posts

I am 8 months out and have had an occasional diet soda. What does everyone think about it. My surgeon said there is no real proof that it effects us negatively. I rarely drink one but am wondering what everyone else has done and thoughts.

I used to drink up to 8 diet cokes a day. I was told I had to stop before surgery, so I did. Enter Hell Week. Migraines every. damn. day. But it passed. I'm not touching that stuff again. (No matter how much I want to.) According to a youtube video by Dr. Alvarez the soda will not stretch your sleeve.

I had always despised SF anything! Now all I drink is Ocean Spray SF Cran- Pomegranate, Cran- Peach & Cran- Lemonade. Just pour the powder in a bottle of Water several times a day. I think it has better flavor than Crystal Light. Easier way to get my Fluid intake!

I used to enjoy sodas before my surgery. To be honest I really don't get that much satisfaction out of them today. I still have 2-3 diet soda's a week, but mostly to have something different to drink besides Water, coffee or drink mixes. It's very important to stay hydrated. If this requires someone to drink a little soda or coffee (things most NUTS tell us to say away from) to hit our daily intake of Fluid, so be it. If your sleeve is comfortable with a little soda that's wonderful.

None of us could possibly down an entire can of soda like we did pre-op. Our sleeve is too small. The most we can/should drink is a few swallows at a time. Then give your sleeve a few seconds to let out a little burp before the next series of swallows. It important that we don't overfill out sleeves with ANYTHING! That includes food, liquids or even CO2 gasses from the soda.

I wouldn't recommend carbonated beverages for those just coming out of surgery.

I drink diet Doctor Pepper, maybe 2 or 3 cans a week and also a diet Ginger Ail and feel no eeffects at all that it hurts my diet. I've lost 170 pounds and have kept it off.

I still drink diet caffeine free coke. I always pour it over a glass of ice, which disperses some of the carbonation. However, it's not my only drink...I still get 64 oz of Water a day. For me, it's an evening treat while I'm at the computer or reading a book. When I was less than 3 months post-op, I refused to drink any soda and I obsessed over it like crazy. When I added a diet soda here and there into my routine, the obsession went away.

Pre-op I drank 8-10 cans of diet coke a day (my poor kidneys) and now I might drink 5 cans in a week. I date my cases of drinks when I buy them and only keep a few in the fridge at a time. I finished my last case Thursday and it had been here since mid March. I used to go through a case of soda in under a week.

I've lost over 90 pounds, so I must be doing something right. :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
