Losing Without Protein Drinks?

Recommended Posts

I'm 12 days out and have yet to have a Protein Drink. I don't feel like I can EVER drink one. As soon as I start thinking about it, I feel like vomiting. I have been eating soft Protein sources like cottage cheese and Beans, yet nowhere near the 60-80gm I am supposed to have. I'm not sure I ever got that much in a day, even when I was over eating.

So, I keep reading that it's the protein that makes you burn pounds. I'm worried that without it, I will not lose or lose very slow. Has anyone had success without actually using Protein shakes?

Protein doesn't help you drop pounds, but it helps your body recover post-surgery and afterwards, it helps minimize the amount of muscle you burn, which in turn prevents your metabolism from slowing down too much.

Have you tried the Premier Protein drinks? They are the ONLY ones I can tolerate since surgery. They are sold at Sam's.

Also, the other way to get Protein in is to drink milk. I drink at least 2 glasses of 1% milk per day -- that's 200 calories and 16 grams of protein.

I had my 3 week post op Thursday and was told that my Protein intake was way to low. She told me that I needed to drink 3 shakes per day in order to get in enough protein. Without it my body would stay in a stall and not shed the weight. She says that protein is essential to losing the weight and recovering after surgery. I've been in a two week stall but the minute I started drinking my shakes and increasing my Water I started to see the pounds come off again. Try playing around with the shakes perhaps try something new. Maybe even a soy or hemp protein that's easier to digest then whey. At this early stage it's gonna be near impossible to get all our protein from food alone. Hang in there and keep us posted.

There are protiens out there that don't taste bad :) i would recommend ordering samples and trying different flavors until u find one you like. I really liked the hot cocoa protien powder - it's great to be able to relax with a cup of it!

I was in the same boat as you. So I ate a lot of cottage cheese, babybel cheese, purred meats, tuna, and drank a lot of milk. Thats all I could do. By the time my aversion to them went away I could eat enough Protein to make my goal! You;ll be ok!!! Just be diligent.

I just order a sample of nectar. A man are they good!!!! I have a hard time with Protein Shakes too. The only one I could choke down was chocolate Unjury but one of the forums mentioned Nectar. They taste like fruit juice and don't have a funny smell. They are also aspartame free and have 23 g of Protein per drink.

I am 8 weeks out and have not drank three of those things. I can't eat hardly anything either. I am losing like crazy, so weight loss is not dependent on it. I have lost 63#. It will keep you strong though. You cannot build muscle without Protein. I get < 20g a day. I am very weak and struggle to get through every day. I am trying to increase mine, but everything makes me sick. Although I like seeing the scale drop, that is the least of my worries now. I am concerned with starving. My suggestion is to try every thing that has protein you can get your hands on. You don't have to drink those shakes, but you do have to have nutrition. Do what you can with real food.< /p>

I haven't had a Protein drink since about week 2 post op, I just can't stomach them. The nectar ones are by far the best, but my last banana flavored protein drink tasted like peanuts (not bananas, and I absolutely detest peanuts) so I'm a little scarred by that. I'm now a little over a month out. I'm down 31 lbs since surgery (11 lbs just this week). So even without the Protein Drinks, I'm still losing like a champ.

For the first time today, after 6 weeks of drinking Protein shakes, I added 1 tsp of Decaf instant coffee to my chocolate. It seriously reduced the sweet taste and the Protein Powder smell.

Worth a try, maybe?

If you don't get enough Protein, supposedly you are apt to lose your hair. It'll take approximately 3 months to show (malnourishment takes time to show in your body). But it's important to get your Protein to encourage your body to heal.

I enjoy the clear liquid Proteins in a drink by Cytomax. I feel like I write this every time I post, but sorry... everything else makes me wretch. I like the tropical and tangerine, haven't tried the watermelon yet.

The Syntrax nectar Proteins are supposed to be good too. For a while I could do one in Water, now it makes me wretch. The Cytomax is the only thing that has been consistent for me. :( Good luck to you and try to get your proteins in!

You should incorporate the idea "proetin first" because protein fills you up longer and has less calories, as well as good for body function like healing, etc.

I can't stomach the Protein Shakes either post-op and I enjoyed them before the surgery! I'm mainly using the Body Fortress Protein Shots I get from Wal Mart (6for 9.97). They taste like concentrated Kool-Aid but I can get down 26g of Protein by only having to drink 2.9 ozs of yukky tasting protein shots. I've ordered Unjury chicken Soup but it hasn't arrived yet.

Aviiva, I use the EAS Advantage carb control. I like the chocolate fudge pretty well, but I was just wondering about the Myoplex. So, good to know, I think I will try them.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
