Oh, that's interesting. Perhaps I won't have to do much of one as my BMI is 41.

My BMI was 42 at 3 weeks before surgery and I had to do a 2 week Pre-OP diet. It depends on your surgeon.

It really varies by surgeon. I am so relieved my surgeon only requires a 24- hour liquid diet before surgery.

My BMI wae 65, so my surgeon put me on an all liquid diet - Protein Shakes - for 2 weeks prior to my upcoming surgery date. My friend has the same surgeon, had her surgery last week, and only had to replace 1 meal per day with the liquid diet. Her BMI was 45, and the only time she had to do all liquid was for the 24 hours prior to her surgery. I've lost 17 pounds after 4 days on the all liquid. Im so hungry!! I hope this feeling passes soon! I love reading all these posts about everyone's journey - didnt realize there were so many of us out there taking this step!

Yep, along with everyone else. Every surgeon is going to tell you something different. It depends on where you go too....and what BMI your insurance wants you at. I'm going on a low carb/low calorie diet prior to surgery. I hope to make this as simple as possible. Good luck to you!

I will be on a low-fat Atkins diet for two weeks. My surgeon requires this to all his patients regardless of BMI to shrink your liver.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
