A Sudden End To Food Funerals

Recommended Posts

Ever since I decided to get sleeved I have been on a crazy food funeral binge. I've not gained any weight that hasn't gone right back away (ie: 4lbs the week of my period that was gone again by the next week) so I haven't eaten too much more than normal which is good- but something really interesting has happened and I thought I'd mention it to see if any of you have experienced something similar!

My surgery is 2/6- A week from Monday- and al of a sudden today I have ZERO taste for food. My husband made one of my absolute all time favorites tonight for dinner.... and I am completely disinterested. To the point where the thought of eating it makes me a little bit queasy.

Granted, I was just sick, but yesterday I was starving and wanted to eat EVERYTHING.

Luckily my dr doesn't require a pre-op liquid diet because I would totally blown it last week- but all I've wanted today are liquids, aside from a few bites of scrambled egg this morning and a few slices of deli turkey for dinner.< /p>

I'm not sure what it is that changed! Maybe I'm just starting to get really nervous? Whatever it is I am SOOOO glad because I was so scared I was going to go for my weigh-in on Tuesday and find out I had gained weight and can't get my surgery.

Has anyone else had that flip switch into sleeve-mode sort of out of the blue?

I have been having food funerals for about two weeks now and have gained a bit of weight :(

Every time I see delicious food I think, "I won't be able to eat this for a very long time" or "I might not be able to tolerate this cake again" and I overindulge.

I decided today, that I am going to start slowly substituting some meals for a shake or maybe some Snacks. I drank two shakes today, one for Breakfast and one for lunch, and was surprisingly full!

My surgery is on March 23rd and I hope I get that disinterested feeling that you have!

Goodluck!

I've had somewhat of a flipped switch, too. I think it's because I'm so mentally obsessed with all of this that I'm really starting to see food=weight/fat, calorie control=progress. I want to go forward not backward. Also, I've started exercising and I just can't seem to enjoy my old, gorging ways because I know what it takes to burn off those calories. I'm almost to my pre-op goal (lose 30 pounds before surgery - I'm at 29 today and surgery is tomorrow!) so I'm happy that I didn't fully give in to the the pre-op eating free for all I thought I might. I'm even happier that, like you, I haven't really wanted to.

So I thought yesterday was a fluke, but I woke up today to the same ambivalent feeling about food. Total disinterest. I know that I really do need to eat something but the thought of doing so makes me want to hurl. I don't know if it's nerves or something else, but I'll take it!

Y'all hang in there--once sleeved, there is an intense period of having to deal with food ("What should I eat? When? How much? Can I have ___?"), and then, things shift into place and you start living life without worrying about it any more. It gets to be automatic; worries or even thoughts about food don't really intrude any more, and it certainly doesn't control your life or your behavior. Freedom! Those days are coming!!

101driver, best wishes on your surgery tomorrow!! Looking forward to watching your progress as you join the losers' bench!

Had my "last meal today" because I start my 2 week liquid diet monday. All the days leading up I felt I needed to stop at all my fav. places. But just have to keep reminding myself whats important so I tried not to overdue anything...but these 2 weeks of shakes will be trying.

This is exactly how it happened for me. Suddenly, about 2 weeks from surgery a switch went off and I ate well from that point forward. I did liquids for the few days before surgery even though it wasn't required by my surgeon. It felt good going into surgery staying the same weight for the entire month of December. Mentally it would have messed with me if I had gained.

But trust me... it is all different after surgery. Eating too much is the last thing on my mind. Life has changed and it will for you too. :)

Oh man I can relate about the food funerals... and 'Last Supper' syndrome!!!! Ever since my date was set I've been thinking 'what should I eat since I'll never be able to have it again'!! Which I think is totally ridiculous as I think for the most part I'll be able to have my faves about a year out, just in much smaller portion?? Which is fine with me!! Just a taste now & then would be great! But right now I'm kinda getting to that 'flipped-switch' you're talking about and getting 'sick' of food.....as in not even interested in my normal favorites! However I'm trying hard to fight that (this is not a good thing) and sabotaging myself and still having my 'last suppers' daily! Good thing my liquid diet starts next week 'cuz this is ridiculous of me!! :-)

Ya, that's EXACTLY where I was last week. I could have written your post. Now that I'm on day 4 of liquids, and past the caffeine withdrawal, I'm having a big ol' pity party. I need to stay busy is what i need to do!

I agree Dooter. Staying busy helps me too. I will say that the liquid diet hasn't been as bad as I thought it would. I did however attend many food funerals prior to the start of my liquid diet. Now I have decided that food is my enemy and I will kick its butt.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
