Did Everyone Here Go On A Liquid Diet Before Surgery?

Recommended Posts

No Xray prior to surgery, but was on a calorie restriction for about 2 -3 weeks prior, then liquid for 4 days prior. I have heard it does reduce the liver size and was told surgery has been rescheduled for other people if it was found to be too large.

Just a thought..............If you can not commit to a 2 week liquid diet for your health and safety during surgery.................how are you ever going to make the change needed after you have the surgery?......just a thought

You can have as MANY thoughts as you want, however where exactly did I say I couldn't do two weeks? You have seen only this post and assume that I couldn't. I asked a simple question about a two week diet, which I am entitled to. So please don't assume. Just a thought.

Talk to your surgeon about it.

I'm going to, I see towards the end of the month. Just asking questions and getting answers from different people. I'm waiting for a person who went to the same hospital to see if I can get some insight.

My surgeon didn't require any sort of x-ray or pre-surgery diet. I think a lot of surgeons do things that their insurers require and that the patient's insurers will pay for. Ask and be sure that you're comfortable with the answers. M.

Yea I read that if it's too large or some people cheat then they stopped the surgery. I'm not playing that. I just couldn't imagine doing that, and getting cut and being told "Go home." I have only had one surgery that was needed, so this is the first time I am seeking out surgery, ya know? So I can't slack.

I have a nice novel size amount of questions for my doctor. I want to make sure I have all needed documents as well as have all questions asked. So far thanks to sites like these I have gotten most answered. It also helps that I have a friend who has had WLS by the same doctor I am going to, so I get some info from her.

Well that's easy- we all get the surgery because we obviously do not have the will power to walk away from food without having a surgical tool in place. I imagine after you have your sleeve in place it's easy to forget what a nightmarish existence we non-sleevers live in having to fight ourselves. We KNOW what we need to do, but doing it is a totally different story.

Not sure why this thread turned so negative. I am sure she will ask her doctor what he recommends.

But if we applied the "ask the doctor" logic across the board, there wouldn't be much use for this forum.

It doesn't hurt to find out what others are doing, it is a good way to come up with questions for our doctors. She never said she wasn't going to follow doctor's orders.

She never said she had talked to her doctor about it either.....make yourself clear. I thought that the way she talked that she did not want to do the liquid diet. Sorry for upsetting so many. Oh and I was sleeved 5 weeks ago and before that had a band so I have been through it all without any help of a site to ask questions.

I think it depends on your Doctor. My guy only made you do all liquid the day before your surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
