Did anyone take Prophylactic Antacid like Prevacid?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon has me taking Prevacid as a prophylactic for 3 mos. Initially, I forgot to get the script filled when we first got home and when I went back for my check-up, he asked about it. Oops, I told him I completely forgot. I told him I don't have ANY symptoms of reflux, but he said he puts all his patients on it for a 3 mos period after surgery. I'm taking it daily now, 1 pill a day.

I don't have any issues with side effects and can't find any documentation via net or otherwise that would create a concern taking this med for an extended period of time.

Does anyone else take a prophylactic antacid?

I've taken either Prevecid or Prilosec for years now will absolutely no ill effects, except no heartburn at all. The dr. switched me to Acifed just before my surgery as the pill is no bigger than a birth control pill and I continue to take it. You can now buy some of these antacids over-the-counter hon. They definitely won't hurt you. In fact they may well help you. I would say I've been on them for about 15 years total to prevent getting an ulcer back.

Take care my friend

I take prevacid before I go eat Mexican food, other than that I don't seem to have a problem with heartburn.

My doc does not have me on it forall time, but has told me that it is smart to take something as a buffer before eating anything spicy. I LOVE spicy food, esp these buffalo wings at a restaurant nearby here called the green iguana. mmm mmm mmm. If I am going to have them tho, I have to take soemthing before hand so that my stomach does not become irritated and swollen.

I was on Prevacid for years before the band I had terrible reflux. I started taking Pilosec OTC since and am doing fine. Hoping that soon I won't have to take anything.

Duh, why didn't I think of that? :pound:

Hi Robin ~ Hope your reflux is improving. How's are you getting along with your fill? Does that cause you more problems with the reflux?

Yes, I started Prevacid a week before being banded and my surgeon has refills on it for 6 months after being banded. No problems.

Hi Angels ~ I think your the only one so far that was on it as a "band" prophylactic. Did you stop after 6 mos and did you find it wasn't needed after that point?

I was banded April 4th so my six months is not up just yet. My surgeon does it for all of his patients as a precautionary measure.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
