This is my 3rd week. I've been naughty and had coffee 5x since surgery (I'm supposed to wait until a month).

coffee is not as acidic as many things I was allowed to consume, so I just took the risk. I plan to hold out this week and wait until week 4 actually is real.

Did you use aritificial sweetners instead of sugar? I am so craving a cup of coffee w/french vanilla flavoring b/c its so cold here in GA. I only drink half a cup to a cup when I have one so its not a lot.

I think part of the concern is the caffeine is a stimulant and makes you hungry. I am 5 weeks out and had a Decaf nonfat latte (which still has caffeine) with sugar free vanilla Syrup and splenda. Early on i would just drink warm decaf tea.

Thanks for asking the question -- that's one of my biggest fears is having to go without my morning coffee....I crave it! Eager to hear what everyone else has to say.

I've been drinking Decaf coffee since right after surgery. IIRC, it is allowed on my list. I actually was allowed to switch to regular coffee at 4 or 5 weeks out, but I've just continued with the decaf. I do use Splenda and artificial liquid cream in mine and have had no problems with it. Well, actually, it does keep things regular in the bathroom for me. I normally have 1 or 2 cups if I'm drinking it at home, or I'll get a large McD's decaf if I'm heading somewhere early in the morning. After about 11 am, though, I won't drink decaf anywhere unless I made it because I'm afraid it will have been sitting for hours.

I've been drinking coffee and tea for the past week or so. I can only drink about a 1/4 of a cup. I'm Canadian and I need my Timmy's! I think the big concern early out is that caffeine can dehydrate you. I just make sure I drink an extra glass of Water after having my coffee or tea. No problems so far, and I feel much more like my old self :)

Wow! I didn't know that you could EVER drink caffeinated coffee! I was told it was one of the NO-NO things never to consume again! I switched to Decaf a few weeks before my surgery, but, I miss the real deal. Yeah! I think I will wait until I'm at least 5-6 weeks past surgery though, to make sure my new tummy if healed. Thanks! Now if only I drink Champagne again :-)

FYI on the champage: I posed the alcohol question, and one woman from France chimed in that they do allow her to have champagne among other wines 4 weeks out. Not to say you should follow other surgeons guidelines because you like them better than yours- but...it begs to stand that perhaps months and months down the road, a glass of champagne may not kill you.

My NUT said I absolutely can drink coffee, at my two week follow up. What I do is put my scoop of Protein Powder (french vanilla) right into it with a little extra skim milk, shake it up well and it's like a Protein latte! I am talking full caf, no Decaf for me! It's up to whether you can tolerate it I think, but I really could not live without my coffee. I do only one cup now, as opposed to the 2-3 I did pre-op.

It is my understanding that stimulants kill hunger, hence amphetamine users usually drop vast amounts of weight and other over the counter diet pills usually contain caffeine as the stimulant. I believe the concern with coffee is the acidic nature which may cause heart burn. I have had coffee since day 3 and I have had no problems. I have never been one to have sugar in my coffee, only creme which is Protein not a carb. but I do prefer whole milk vs creme which has about 11gr of carbs per cup so using a little in your 1 cup of coffee is negligible.

On Decaf Tea contains theophylline ( maybe spelling it wrong), my surgeon pointed out to me that that is an appetite stimulant and only to have one cup per day... or use one bag a couple of times... or take the risk of getting the hungries..

At my 2 week appointment, they told me I could have caffeine. Haven't had any yet, I might give it up!

I'm glad I found this question. I was told not to drink caffeine as a part of my lifestyle change......BUT today I just wanted a cup of DD coffee. I had a medium 3 sugars with cream. I could only drink 1/4 of the cup, but it didn't bother me at all. I won't make it a habit, but girrrrrrrrllllllllllllllllllll it was good. The only thing I think I noticed was a little gas/cramps (so I assumed it was gas) in my tummy which didn't last long. I'll drink a bottle of Water to push it through. Blessings2u--bj

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
