SURGERY ON 11-14-11 :-)

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I am getting sleeved 2 days after you! :cheers2:

Most of my questions were answered at my 3 hour class. I wanted to know if the doctor was conservative or not when it comes to pain medications at the hospital. He is not and I was relieved. ( It was kinda late to ask that question 2 weeks before surgery. ).

We will be given some scripts at our pre-op to be filled BEFORE surgery. If that is not the case for you, you might want to ask. I forgot to ask which medications we are getting. I have read here that Oral disintegrating Prevacid is good for gas, sublingual Zofran for nausea & I think Ragla for spasms.

I must take my allergy meds the night before surgery or I will be sneezing & coughing after surgery :o , so I will ask about that. Most importantly I needed a contact number & person to call post-op with "simple" questions.

Come and introduce yourself in the forum for November Sleevers.

Best wishes!!!!!!

I'm scheduled for Nov. 15th! I decided not to bring a nightgown to the hospital. Since I am only there for 1 night, the hospital gown will be fine for me. Our hospital is small, so it won't be like I'm walking long hallways in my hospital gown. I'm going to wear the non-slip socks they provide too, instead of bringing slippers. I just want to pack lightly:-) I am bringing my smartphone so I can get on this site, of course. Also, I plan to get a journal so I can record my experience. I really just plan to bring my necessary toiletries, my cpap machine in case they "make" me use it, & probably my Bible for inspiration in case I should freak out after surgery. My pre-op appt. is Monday. Yikes! I can't believe how close it is! I will ask about pain meds and getting a pre-op script. Also, I need to ask about my everyday meds that I take for thyroid, etc., so I know whether I have to crush or swallow whole. Not sure what else at this point.

So I've lost 103lbs in about 1 year! I still have about 24lbs to go until I get to goal. So just think how awesome you guys will be next year at this time!!

SLL, I wanted to comment on using the CPAP after surgery. Mine made me hurt worse, probably because of the pressure it provides. I might have worn it for about an hour the first night, and the second night I didn't even turn it on. I have been using it religiously (again) since the third night after surgery.

Good news is that I need to lose 20 more pounds and my doc will have another sleep study done to see if I still need the machine! :)

hi, lucky you, 11/15/11 surgery. I'm envious. My WLS isn't til 12/6/11. I've heard that you should wear there hopital gown, like you said. It has been said that it kindof gets bloody, yeach!!

I'm gonna ask the dr. if i need my CPAP machine, overnight it sounds silly to go to all that trouble. I have only had the cpap machine about one year, i'm sure i will probably not need it eventually. The weird thing is, not only do i not mind wearing the cpap, i think it helps me to sleep longer!! So i'lll kind of be sorry to let it go!!!

i'm sure you'll get through with your surgery with glowing reviews - best wishes for a new and healthier self :seeya: kathy

my questions were more like...how long will my surgery take? how will I feel when I come to? how long until I see my husband? what do I need when i get home? These questions had been answered by our classes before but I wanted to hear it from the doctor.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
