How much have you or did you lose?

Recommended Posts

So, Thursday night I went to one of the support groups required by my doctor and my insurance. It was nice to be around other people going through the same thing and actually had fun there. My cousin went with me and everyone loved that we were cousins and doing this together. She is have gastric bypass because that is all her insurance will cover and I am planning on the sleeve.

I'm starting to be a little concerned though. Out of the group of people that was there it seemed like the really big losers were the people who had gastric bypass. (A surgery I'm REALLY not interested in.) There were people there who had been sleeved, but none who had been sleeved longer then 6 months I'd say, and she had lost 70 lbs. (AMAZING!)

To be a healthy BMI I need loose around 160 pounds. (Can't believe I'm sharing that number.) I've been lurking on this boards and asking questions for a few weeks now, but I don't think I've really seen anything where people had that much weight to loose. I'm sort of setting a goal that would put me in the "overweight" category because I want a realistic goal. If I go beyond that, wonderful! I don't want to set myself up for something that could be considered a "failure." To me, losing 100 pounds would be wonderful, and I do not doubt for a moment I can do that with the sleeve!

How much have you lost? Do you think it is realistic to reach a healthy BMI with sleeve? Has anyone here had sleeve long enough to know that wouldn't mind answering these questions?

Thanks,

D

I am 7 weeks out and like you need to lose alot of weight as well as of this morning I am 53 pounds down from my highest wieght. So i am pretty pleased I feel so much better and really have alot of energy these days. I am taking two prenatal vitmans a day and 5000mcg of B12 daily and a 20 mg of omeprazole or prevacid a day to keep the acid down. If i eat to fast i will get sick so remember to watch your portions and eat slowly, I still have 125 to go but feeling lots better now. Good luck on your journey.

You absolutely can shoot for a healthy BMI. There are a number of people who have achieved a healthy BMI and lost a lot of weight. Quite a few people have lost over 100 or 150lbs. I've lost over 200 lbs myself and am still going.

If you skim this board, you will find a lot of folks who have lost a lot of weight (down to a healthy BMI) with the sleeve. It's a tool--how you use it makes a difference. That being said, it's a tool that does seem really helpful!! I'm down 88 pounds (maybe more--haven't weighed this week) in 5-1/2 months and have 24 pounds to go to a "normal" BMI. And believe me, I haven't been killing myself at the gym. The sleeve helps me control my portion sizes and the types of food I select, and that is working for good weight loss.

Good luck on your journey!

I have lost 97 pounds in slightly over 7 months. This includes the 11 pounds I lost during the 2 week pre-surgery diet. I have 21 pounds more to lose to achieve my goal weight. That will place me in the middle of the normal BMI range. I could actually stop at 10 pounds higher than my goal weight and still be "normal". I will decide when I am going to stop losing once I get there.

Take advantage of the first 6 to 9 months after you are sleeved - you will get the most dramatic results then. I encourage you to use the tool (your sleeve) to its utmost advantage.

Good Luck! It was a great decision for me, I hope you feel the same way.

October 25th I will be 5 months out from my surgery, wow, how time flys. I have lost 80 lbs, including my pre-op diet. I feel like a different person. When I lose another 5lbs, I will no longer be obese, my BMI will be below 30 for the first time in many, many years. All of my blood numbers are normal and I take no medication. I thank God every day for this tool that has helped me get my life back.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
