How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

oh gezzz I wish I had read these threads a little closer when it came to the aftermath of the surgery. Not that I wouldn't have done it but I wasn't as aware as I should have been on how much discomfort I would have. I am finding it difficult to sit or lie down, I just can't get comfortable. Please tell me this passes quickly. Also I feel like I have swallowed some pills and they are stuck in my esophagus, is that the feeling from the band?? How long does this take to pass?? I am expecting to go back to work on Monday, will I feel better by then?? I do know the end result will be exactly what I'm expecting, and I can't wait till I feel better and actually can appreciate all of this. Thanks for any answers and encouragement you can give me.

Does anyone do anything like pouch loading? Drinking 8oz of Fluid before eating, then eating your meal and not drinking fluids for 1 hour afterwards. Do you notice if that has any help prior to getting to the "sweet spot?"

Sue Stenzel

Yes, that is what my doctor advised me to do. I don't know if it helps with getting to the "sweet spot" but it's supposed to be better for the band.

Notmzperfect--yes, that feeling is perfectly normal. It will slowly go away. I went back to work on Friday after being banded on Monday and I was fine (sore but fine). I do have a desk job and if I had it to do over I would have waited until a week post surgery to go back to work. You'll be fine. Congrats on being in bandland!

You'll feel better in no time. Just relax and rest. Take your pain meds or some liquid Tylenol and give yourself some time. God Bless.

notmzperfect

you need to get Prilosec from drugstore and take two pills. Should do this daily for a while and chop up your pills. Getting things stuck is bad. It can cause your band to slip.

I feel totally guilty if I don't exercise. It has definitely become a major part of my life. I get really mad when things come up and interfere with my gym time.

Notmzperfect, did you take some pills, or is it just feel like something is stuck? I had a really easy recovery, so I really can't answer how long it will take you to feel better. I got banded on a friday and went back to work on Mon. I have a desk job too though.

You shouldn't have anything get stuck this soon after banding though. You don't have a fill, so everything should go right down.

What a difference a day can make....I actually slept last night and was able to move around much better....I think I was sleep deprived, starving and hurting so I was more then cranky.

I didn't actually get pills stuck it was just the feeling I was feeling. I didn't realize I was going to feel the band the way I do.

Thank you for all your responses, without this thread I'd be clueless as to what to expect next.

notmzperfect - the 1st 3 days are the worst - each day after that gets better - I has surgery on Tues 7/17 and was back to work the following Monday - Your port site may be uncomfortable for the 1st week or 2 -Surgery affects everyone differently - When I woke up felt like an elephant had kicked me in the stomach and stil had his foot on me but by Thurs was 100% better than day one.

Walk as much as you can - get all your Protein in - drink your Water and follow your doc's orders - you will survive and be happy that you were banded :biggrin1:

Welcome to Band Land :bounce:

Denise - I am this way too!!! I get really pissed off when something interfers with my exercise... I have to do it right after work or i won't go.. and i want to get to the gym before everyone else does.

Well the week of Thanksgiving and the week after I will be on vacation - so I will go every morning... and really be able to get in good work outs...

Hi,

My weight loss is so sporadic! It's frustrating! I had my 3rd fill last Monday and it's almost like I had more restriction after the 2nd than I do since the 3rd.. which of course makes no sense. I had 3cc in there and they put in 1cc more. After the 2nd fill I lost 10 lb. in 12 days. Then I gained three back and I've been playing with those 3 lb for the last two weeks. I thought after my fill on Monday I'd start losing again. Of course, we're on the road in our RV now and that's more of a challenge, and I retain Water on the days when I'm just sitting in the RV riding all day. But, I also don't eat as well as I do at home. Like yesterday I had a can of chicken/rice Soup for lunch. Not enough Protein, too many carbs, too much sodium. Got to my sister's in the afternoon & we all went out for Mexican! I had a seafood Chimichanga type thing and just ate some of the insides, but also some of the rice and Beans and 4-5 chips w/salsa. So, not too bad. But I also had access to Cookies yesterday and ate about 3 small chocolate chip cookies over the course of the day after not one whole cookie in 4 months! So, no more sweets and I must be more diligent about my food choices even though we are away from home because it's going to be a LOOOONNNGGG winter!!<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Hi Ya'll,

As you might know, I have already seen the Doc at River Oaks Hospital; have seen the shrink and was hoping to have it done at this hospital because it's closer.

BUT............

I just called up the first hospital Central Mississippi Medical Center (CMMC) that I went to for their seminar today and talked to them again. (I went to their Seminar about three months ago). I need my health Ins. (Federal BC/BS) & Medicare to approve it. Medicare has to approve that the hospital can do it and has done a minimum number of these type of surgeries. I just found out that River Oaks approval will take another year to year and one-half to get approved from the little bit I know about this stuff.

CMMC has been approved for the number of surgery's; has just had their "WALK THRU" as part of the approval process. SO............ the lady said that Medicare might approve them in the next 3-4 weeks. They will call me when they do.

I wanted to go have it done at River Oaks because it's closer, but will go to CMMC if it happens. It's not much farther so it will be just fine.

Don

Hi I'm still here. Frustrated and angry. The same ol thing - If I had will power I wouldn't have needed the surgery. But I am bound and determined to lose this weight and hopefully, someday the money I spent will prove to be worthwehile cause right now it's not.

You need to go to UserCP at the top of the page, then "Edit Signature", then paste the code into the signature box. Then it will appear every time.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
