How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

Thanks karey for the link. I was using fitday.com but found that it was too easy just to forget it after I started working again. Going to work everyday after not having a set schedule for so many years is pretty stressful. I've decided just to keep a small notebook in my purse and jot it down as I eat it.

Good luck to all of you who are getting close to Lap Band Day. I'm excited for you!

green: You did a good job of describing my relationship with my MIL. She doesn't actually say anything in a straight forward way. It's always in the form of a supposedly sweet question. But there's an under current of disapproval that I've always felt. Not just because of my weight (I haven't always been fat) but also because I am pretty high maintenance. She isn't. In fact, she's managed to sock away many, many thousands of dollars over the years just pinching pennies out of her household budget. In fact recently she loaned one of my DH's siblings $50,000 out of her petty cash. But I digress... I am better educated and smarter and more well traveled than she, and she does respect my intellect. One flattering aspect of our relationship is that she always calls to get my opinion on any tough decisions that are troubling to her. She's an introvert, I'm outgoing. We are completely different women on the surface, but I think we both are good inside and never knowingly set out to hurt others.

Your relationship with your MIL is complicated by things that ours is not, but I think almost all of the in-law relationships are more complicated than with one's own parents.

Hi Everyone!

I think it is never TOO LATE to take care of yourself. We all DESERVE A HEALThY LIFE!

BJean - you are always very funny. Between you and green I just keep laughing. I have already figured out that part of my journey will include a face and neck lift. I am not sure about the Tummy Tuck. I will have to get those pounds off first and stay at a weight for more than two minutes. I have had two fills, but no restriction. I think the last fill completely missed the mark, so I have another one this week and we'll just have to see where I am.

I look around at women our age and they look older, sagging chins, wrinkled necks, I think it sucks that aging does this to women. Many men look better longer.

Now on a happy note, last week before the 4th I got under 200 pounds. So, I feel like I am on my way. I went up to the mountains with my brother's family (three kids under 7) and my sister's family (2 kids under 5) and sprained my ankle, so the great exercising I've been doing is now on hold and I am icing and resting. Oh well, I'll be able to get back to it.

Hugs to you all, make sure to hug yourselves, we are embarking on a major journey of change.

Michelle

Carolyn, congratulations on your surgery date. Keep us posted. Also remember that it's not uncommon for people to have serious doubts as surgery approaches.

Green, I hope your birthday went well. Remember, scotch can also be used as a preservative, so "bathing" in it perhaps can counteract some of the effects of having looser skin. Just a thought....

As for me, I'm nursing a sore nose after a bizarre accident yesterday. Though my staff is responsible for keeping the office clean, if I see something that needs a little attention I'll usually look after it if it only takes a minute or so. I was in the loo and noticed that the rim on the toilet need a wipe. It actually needed a bit of a rub and I gave it a squirt of our air freshener to moisten it, so I had the bottle in one hand and my tissue in the other when my glasses began to slip off my head and into the toilet. My instinctive grab at them resulted in me cramming one arm of the glasses up one of my nostrils. Holy crap. I was writhing in a fetal position for about 5 minutes before I could even stand.

Knucklehead.

LOL Sounds something i would do... :)

I am 52 and having my surg on 7/26. Hi Phyl. I too wish this surgery had been available years ago. I have been researching WLS for years but could never bring myself to have the gastric bypass (risks, re-routing insides too scary), but when I heard of this I thought "This is it". It is so good to see positive results from those over 50.

BTW, it is hard to find this thread sometimes. Is there anyway I can mark it so I can get to it easily when I sign on.

Sunshine - I am just like you - a couple of friends have had the bypass but didnt want to go that drastic and up until just recently insurance wouldn't cover the band - just bypass. Well as they say the 50 is the new 30 so we are doing ok... Pretty soon we will look as good as oprah

:)

Ok gang I need some help on this issue - I think it will be a problem for me.. Since my 1st visit with the surgeon i have been EATING EATING EATING... Have gained 6 lbs since 5/31.. ate 4 cinimon rolls last night and a whole box of scalloped potatos.

I have been thinking about my eating before i eat and while i am eating (hasn't stopped me but I have been thinking :)) I keep eating even when i'm full just cuz it taste good. I know with the band i will feel full a lot faster and if i over eat i will get sick - which can lead to all kind of problems.

How have you who are banded dealt with it??

Indiogirl, you have just described me to a tee. I had already been thinking we have a lot in common. I do this every time I diet. It is like, I can't have the food so I eat and eat and eat, of course, thinking about it all the time. I am hoping the band puts a stop to this. We can struggle with this together.

I did the same thing right before I was banded. I still deal w/ it sometimes, but I know that's just head hunger (like right now, I'm really full, but there are gooey chocolate chip Cookies in the kitchen that are calling my name! :hungry: but I'm so full I hurt, so, no Cookies for me!). Sometimes I eat anyway, but I'm really trying to make my head pay attention to my stomach. I was just banded in May, so I'm still trying to learn how to work w/ my band and of course, I'm still waiting to get that final adjustment for that sweet spot! :clap2:

I can't eat like that. (You need more of a fill. Unless you are throwing up when you eat that much) If I try to overeat, it's so painful, I can't take another bite. there is no way I could eat 4 cinnamon rolls.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
