I had a bit of a "last supper" complex pre-op. I didn't binge, but I did have some of the things that I knew would not be allowed for some time after surgery (steak, really spicy food, etc.). Post-op, my cravings are primarily in my head. I have had some days where I didn't make the best choices (for example, snacking on pretzel crisps instead of protein), but nothing that would equate to my pre-op poor eating habits.

My carb intake has increased slightly in the last week or so, and I think it's being reflected in my weight loss - so I've had to consciously get back on track. To me, it doesn't feel any different than all the pre-op dieting I did - I know when I've made a mistake or a bad choice, and I have to rectify it. The only difference is that I'm not able to eat inappropriate portions of the foods I did before . . . so the battle seems much easier.

Post op it's easier then you think. The hunger is gone, you need a reminder to eat meals and the restriction is real and it is tight. The other biofeedback is your food budget is so small that if you don't eat as prescribed, you will feel terrible. Tonight for dinner I had 3 oz's tuna and a third of a banana. It was all I could eat and I have NO desire to eat any more.

As far as the food funerals go. I think we all do that to some degree or another.

For me, I wanted to be sure I went one last time to my favorite restaurants and have that special meal. I generally wasn't binging and split my meals with my daughter. Just enjoyed the tasty food one last time. The good news is I have not had any food issues after surgery and once I am past the phased diet's I should be able to enjoy the same restaurants and meals but at reduced portion size.

I go to Overeaters Annonymous meetings and at the last one, someone was talking about "the last supper" mentality. It's so true. I've even been doing it and I'm nowhere close to getting the surgery yet! Then I feel guilty and slightly sick. I've eaten so much sugar lately, I've been giving myself headaches because I'd previously cut it almost completely out. :( I know I'm just scared. I'm out of my comfort zone and in panic mode.

I keep doing the last supper too. The problem is the next morning when i wake up I'm like "it's a new day I will be on track today". But then by the evening I eat something I shouldn't have.....another "last supper" so to speak. I am fine all day, it's the night time when I am rocking my daughter to bed that gets me. I will get thru this, this is exactly why I am getting this surgery....to help me. Until the surgery i will continue to work on these eating triggers.

I did plenty of binging before surgery. My BMI was less than 40, and, because I was having my surgery in Mexico, there was no pre-op diet requirement. I feel fortunate because I really doubt I could have coped with some of the pre-op diet and other requirements I see written about here. I probably gained 5-10 pounds pre-op, but it came off very quickly post-op.

Thank you, Denise, that has really helped me. I am not binging, in fact, I am really keeping to the liquid Protein diet, but I am SO torn about having to 'give up' all those wonderful foods. Great to hear I won't want them, eventually. And congrats, by the way, on your terrific numbers. I am looking forward to that sort of success also. Mary

Good Morning

I had my sleeve April 7th and I know what you are going through. But the closer you get to surgery you will realize that binging is the worst you can do. You want your liver not to be enlarge and not being on a weight reduction program will not help this. Once i had my surgery I have not been hungary, I eat by seeing what time it is. I used to love sweets and the other day took a crumb of a chocolate chip cookie which I loved before surgery and I thought ohhh how gross. I had to spit it out. I don't care if I ever eat junk again. Now they do not do surgery on our minds so mentally you think you want these things but after you start loosing which happens quick you get into shopping for new clothes and the complements seem to replace the food. You will be fine but what your going through is normal.

Denise

i have definatly lost my taste for junk. i feel so unsatisfied if i eat anything that doesnt have what i need in it. i feel sick if i try to eat sugars. i went through the whole binge period thinking i needed to get it out of my system. i had a food funeral and it was a sad moment as well as a happy one. the sooner you start on your diet though the faster the weight will come off. i lost almost 50 pounds pre-op and now i am down 80 pounds since starting my journey. i am so thankful that i started sooner rather then later.

good luck to you :)

That must be tuff! I have been dealing with binge eating almost my whole life. I feel extremely anxious, sad, angry and turn to stuffing my face! I am afraid of having this problem after my surgery. I hope that I have the will power to say NO to food.

Do u guys think it's bad to have diced plane chicken breast during this two wk preop if the dr said I can have Protein Shakes and veggies? I get too hungry sometimes n I'm about to do this if it's not bad. Lemme know. Thanks. Btw I could've also had Protein Bars, but I chose not to.

I suspect that every dr. has a different outlook. Mine said (with just a few days to go to surgery) that if missing chewing was driving me nuts to have a bit of plain chicken breast. But no veggies! And no Protein bars, either! I cut up the chicken into small, very small cubes & put it into consumme and chew them really well... preparing for the future.

My surgery is tomorrow. Scared. Oh yeah. But I've lost 14 pounds pre-op and am eager to get on the journey.

Good luck with yours!

Mary

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
