Why no capsules?

Recommended Posts

I've seen it mentioned on a few threads that bandsters are not supposed to take capsules? Why? :D I don't remember my doctor saying anything about this or else I've just forgotten, but I'm taking my effexor in capsule form and have not had any problems. I've also taken tylenol in capsule form.

Just looking for an explanation. :)

I think many band doc's feel that capsules might get stuck in the small stoma that the band makes. That's what I have been told.

It's not a problem UNTIL it becomes a problem. :) If you're not overly restricted, you may be able to take them fine, however, it's also very possible to become restricted enough to not allow for capsules to pass through the stoma without much pain, possibly not at all, becoming stuck. Once you go there, you'll never want to go back.

In my case, I always take my medications with food of some sort. While I'm having dinner, along with a bite or with a spoonful of yogurt, ice cream, Jello - something to help it slip through. Capsules were a problem for me before being banded, so it's a practice I've always used. Nothing like having a hard capsule stuck in your gullet for 24hrs at a time. :D

Go in caution...

I take Effexor, too. My surgeon told me to open the capsule and put it in a small glass of Crystal Light and drink it. That's what I have been doing and it works fine.

I put my capsule in a glass and pour a "couple of swallows" worth of Water over it. Wait 1 - 2 minutes and drink it down. So far I haven't had any problem with it sticking. One time I forgot to take the pill and it sat in the Water for more than a few minutes. When I touched the capsule to get it unstuck from the side of the glass it felt very, very slimy. I swallowed it down without a problem.

The capsule itself is made of gel and when it's left in water for a couple of minutes, it starts to disolve and, after feeling one, I can't imagine needing anything else to make it slip through the stoma.

BTW, soaking the capsule was the way my lap band doctor recommended taking my capsule pain meds post-op.

Hm. My antibiotic after surgery WAS a capsule. He said IF I have trouble, to open it up and dump the liquid in Water and take it that way (which I did, because I was scared), but never said anything about not taking them in the future.

I was never told not to take anything in capsule form; first I've heard of that.

I've had no problem, so I will continue with this practice!

I also take effexor as well as prozac in capsule form. My dr. is being kind of a jerk about switching me to smaller capsules or even pills, so I've just been taking the regular size capsules. The effexor XR capsules are pretty big, but I haven't had any problems. It could be because I take my meds at night when I have a bit less restriction.

It seems there are quite a few opinions and variations on taking capsules. It doesn't bother me when I take them, but it is something that I keep in the back of my mind.

Keep the info comin'.

That is really interesting. I had surgery by Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey (he is banded as well) and he told me to just soften the capsule in my mouth for about one minute and then swallow it. They slide right down! He says whenever he has a cold or anything, he looks for something in capsule form to take as they seem to go down easier than pills (even those cut in 1/2 or whatever!

I take herbal supplements in big, huge capsules and have no problem with them at all. And I do have good restriction. I just have never had a problem with pills of any kind, despite a lot of pre-band worrying.

I take them everyday and that has never been a problem. I have 2.5 in a 4cc band,, I am really restricted 1/4 cup and a 1/2 cup absolute max.. So I say try it if it gets stuck it will get unstuck eventually.. I actually do not think it will... but you never know..

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
