Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

all up to you..its always going to be work...I knew that going in...and unfortunate things have made my journey at a stall...I feel very bad whereas a year ago at this weight I felt beautiful. It is a tool..I had Horrible experience with my surgeon after i started having health issues..so now i have been having to count on me ...to pull myself up and get back to losing..I have a good 70 more pounds I would like to lose.

Try to keep positivity in your life and if you see negativity taking over get away from it or seek support ...Dont try to handle it alone.

I'm so glad to hear you are taking the bull by the horns and turning this back around in your favor. life style changes are fine to prattle about when one isn't fully engaged in dealing the the brunt of daily experiences. I never did 'indulge' and avoided most people induced problems...but still things can and do go awry and like you said, we shouldn't "go it alone".

That fear of living fuller and exposing myself to more possible disappointments and traumas makes me fear losing the weight completely. I keep asking myself: what'll be left after I've lost it?

Thanks for sharing this...and good luck with whatever your trying to achieve. Glad you found a job again. You must have a needed skill. Most folks lose jobs and don't find another for a year or more!

I had my surgery June 1, 2011. I have lost 150 lbs total. But I went to my year checkup yesterday and I did not lose one pound in the last three months. My Dr. was not happy since I have about 44 more to go. He said I should not have leveled off this soon. His advice for me was to drink two shakes, eat a "box meal" and drink 64 oz of Water a day. At first I couldn't figure out what a "box meal" was but then I asked if it was like a Lean Cuisine and he said yes. That is the first time I have ever heard of a Dr. telling someone to eat one of those meals. Has anyone else heard of that?

That's VERY unusual advice IMO. Those box lunches are typically VERY high in sodium and moderate to high in carbs. I would be curious why he is not promoting lean Protein instead of box lunches. That one has me quite baffled!!!

I kInow my weight gain after surgery was due to fluids... It came right off once they took me off of the IV that delivered fluids to me. I was able to take in my Clear Liquids pretty good and with the IV delivering fluids as well I gained 7 pounds.... But that didn't las long....

Maybe he thinks that those meals only contain a certain amount of calories so it's more controlled? That's all I can think of.

Just wanted to check in and say that in any month I can go up 3-5lbs but then I drop back off. Having a weight tracker and logging in my weight everyday helps me know when my body fluxes up and down. There was a period of about 2 months where I didn't lose anything. I did buckle down eliminating all sweets, upping my activity (only by 30 min a week), and watching carbs. Weight started dropping off again. Over the last 2 months I think I've lost about 6lbs. I'm still scared/curious how my weight loss or maintaining my weight will go the further out I am.

Ok, folks I am new to this forum, I want to share my story to hopefully help some of you stay on track and to hopefully get myself back on track. In May of 1999 I had the VSG surgery, I was at 350 lbs and in less than a year I was down to 255 when I stopped losing weight. I should back up and tell you I was a police officer fro 20 years, when I cam out of the police academy in the early 1990's I was 267 with 12 % body fat, running 5 to 7 miles a day and very healthy. Overtime the drive throughs and my constant schedule chages helped me to gain weight. After I had the vsg I felt great, I was back to exercising, but I still didn't eat the best. I will say I pretty much hate the color green oh and I didn't metion yet that Diet Pepsi is like crack to a crack addict for me. So over the last 15 years I have been putting the weight on once I got back to my orginal start weight I pretty much through in the towel and didn't really care. I marked it up as a failure which has never been my norm. I am up to 473 pounds and I have had enough. I have contacted my local hospital and will be meeting there staff to see what I can do. I am hoping to be able to get a vsg pouch back to working if that is possible. What I want to say to all of you brave people is DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING WITH YOUR MEALS NOT EVEN A LITTLE. AND NEVER QUIT YOUR EXERCIS EVEN FOR ONE DAY. AND NO MATTER WHAT NO SODA.

I will keep you all posted as I will look for stength and encouragement as I start this journey again.

You don't say anything about head hunger or emotional eating.

I'm really glad that you shared your story with us. I haven't tried soda at all yet and there is no overriding need here. But I am getting more and more interested in potatoes and other carbs that have been denied me for the year. I'm 6 mos out and lost another lb this am. Down to 227 from 320 before surgery. I'm disgruntled, most of the time and hate this process, the focus, the restrictions, the thought that this won't ever change. Thanks again for sharing...I can envision myself in your situation and that s*cks. Where the h*ll is the magic wand.

It took a lot of courage for you to come on here to talk about your experiences. I commend you for making the journey back to recovery for your health. It is scary to think about regain and I think some people who have this surgery has the misconception that the tool is going to do most of the work for them and consequently have problems. I'm not saying this was you.

I hope that the Dr. and staff can help you come up with a plan to get back on track. Have you considered maybe the DS (Duodonel Switch) surgery? The sleeve is only the first step in that procedure. Maybe that is your better option. Just a thought to consider.

Since you had your surgery so long ago, Steve, can you tell us how much you could eat 6 months post op? 1 year? Now?

So, to try and answer the questions, 6 months pretyy much only ground beef for meat, chickens , steak , pork would not go down and would cause me problems. 1 year out pretty much could have anything if I had sosda with it. What I believe is one of my greatest downfalls was stopping the exercise and drinking soda. I believe they started my down hill sprial. As far as head hunger not sure on that although I have been in emergency services for 25 years and have seen some pretty awful things so I am not sure if it is related to emotional issues. I am a very busy and usually a very happy person so I don't really want to hang it on that as well. Really I think it comes down to comminment and exercise as all weight loss does. It was a great tool to get my weight down to where I felt comfortable emotionally and physically to exercise and be active. When that changed and I relied on the vsg is when I started to fail though weight gain was slow at first so I just kind of lived with it.

I guess what I was asking was how much you could eat. Like 3 ounces at 6 months or maybe 1 slice of pizza at _____ months. That kinda thing. Have you thought about getting the DS?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
