Help me Decide- RNY or VSG??

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have pretty much decided on Dr. Joya for WLS in Peurto Vallarta, probable mid October. I am still going back and forth b/w RNY and VSG. I would prefer the safety of VSG but am scared I won't lose enough weight with it or keep it off. My BMI is 36 and I want to lose 80 lbs. Please help me decide! TY!!!

Also, on Dr. Joya's site it says those with auto immune issues should not get RNY but no warning like that for VSG. Anyone know why that may be? Don't they both leave titanium staples in you?

If you will have a hard time sticking to a healthy diet, RNY may be best for you. Malabsorption is the biggest issue that most people have with RNY. I actually met a lady in support group who look as if she had a green hue to me. People were telling her how good she looked.........? Losing weight is not the most important thing to me. I want to look healthy as well as lose weight. You need to really research and weigh the pros and cons for yourself. I have done that. I would rather have a normal functioning body which is why I have chosen to have VSG. But...I am older. French fries are not a necessary part of my diet. I don't like McDonalds.

Your BMI is low. It seems to me VSG would be good for you. Remember, that is my opinion.

I think I am 95% sure I will go with VSG. I am somewhat concerned about not eating right and regaining. I lost over 120 lbs on Atkins 8 yrs ago and have gained 80 back by eating sugar and junk again. I'm just hoping the VSG will reduce my cravings eough so I won't go down that same path again.

You're likely to get lots of votes for VSG here, just as if you were posting on a RNY site you'd get votes for that. Based upon your BMI though, sounds like VSG would be good for you. While you won't have the malabsorption you'll have the restriction . . . that's not to say that you couldn't figure out a way to eat "around" your sleeve and still take in all that junk, though. You'd be able to figure that out with RNY eventually too, though.

RNY was never a thought for me because I have ulcerative colitis and wasn't having anyone touch my intestines!

Good luck on your decision.

I can only speak from my own experience but I will tell you what I think!!

I chose VSG for these reasons. I too, like many lost and regained MANY times!! I needed something that would help me stop that cycle!! I have a huge problem with Portion Control and the sleeve DEFINATLY controls that for me! I CAN NOT physically eat more than 2 oz of ANYTHING at a time. How can I possibly get fat or stay fat on that???

I didn't always eat bad stuff, just too much of anything at one time will make you gain weight. I could eat 10oz of chicken and a salad and a baked potatoe. That would kill me now!!

If I want a cookie, I can have one and I will not get fat on one, but I can not eat 10 like before! I could eat a piece of pizza (although I choose not to) and only have one and know I will not gain, but before I would eat 4-5 pieces. I do not eat rice, Pasta, bread, or any complex carbs at all. My carbs are from veggies and fruit. I might, one day eat them again, but for now, at 3 months out, I want to take full advantage of my losing stage! The sleeve works if you work it.

I did not want my guts re-routed and did not want to be sick if I chose to eat a cookie or something fried! I love my sleeve and would do it again tomorrow if I had to!

Good luck to you in whatever decision you choose!

Kelly ;)

Read, read, read anything and everything you can on both surgeries.... thats what I did... You need to make an educated decsion on what is best for you, your body... so do the research and ask questions from your doctor...

Good Luck... :D

Two main issue decided for me.

  1. Dumping syndrom
  2. Vitamin deficienties

I hate stomach pain so dumping syndrom was a NO for me.... I was also on a handfull of medicines daily that i hated having to take so the vitmin thing was also a NO for me. That's a simple as it was for me...

Good luck!

RNY is not an attractive surgery if you look at what they are doing to you. Lower BMI's have (so I have been told) a much better chance of losing ALL their excess weight and keeping it off than higher BMI's. I was happy to hear that because I was at 35 BMI at surgery. I think that you will be fine with VSG. It can also be just the first stage of a Duodenal Switch should your BMI skyrocket for some reason.

i have a friend that got rny. she lost all of her weight but her skin just sagged off of her. her skin is now a grey tone. almost all her beautiful hair has lost its shine and the rest fell out. she hates the surgery choice that she made. she told me she often cries about it. she just doesnt look healthy. she has to take handfuls of Vitamins just to get what she needs because she cant absorb anything.. the sleeve was the right choice for me because i wanted to lose weight to get healthy not just skinny. isnt that the point to be heaalthy. i dont think anything about the rny is healthy. when you have to swallow so many pills just to get the vitamins and minerals you need to survive what is healthy about that. i just had my surgery this week and my recovery has been very quick. it took her months to be able to do the things she love to do. i feel so sorry for her. not to mention the fact that she has started to gain weight back already! please reserch all of the things the good and the bad before making your decision, and please let it be your own and not anybody elses. do it for yourself, and youl make the right one.

Thanks for all the comments! The latest update is....... I'm having VSG on October 10th with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali!!! I'm so excited I can't sleep at night, literally!!! I was gung ho on Dr. Joya until I read a horrible recent review on his own website which led me to compare his and dr. Aceves credentials. Well, I decided to pay the extra couple K and go with Dr. Aceves. I can't wait!!!

In other news, my hubby keeps telling me I don't need the surgery just need to exercise more. Uggghh, skinny people do not understand AT ALL!

Hi-

I had VSG, my wife had RnY.

she has lost more weight continually -and has had less eating problems than I.

she eats twice as much as I do. She is 9 months out and is eating normal foods, minus sugar and deepfried/ high fats.

I had less weight to lose, and have a hobby that, well- I need to taste, Doc. agreed sleeve who allow me to do.

I confess- I have tasted, we are talking tablespoons, not glasses...

I sometimes wish I had RnY, my weight loss is sketchy, was great at first, now stalls out, then loses two...

no rhyme or reason, I exercised hard for a week or two- and I have counted calories, around 500/day.

and the day I do a road trip- I lost more...

Gather your info- make a support group with your family/friends- lay it out- pros/cons...

have you talked to the Dr.? Phsyc? what is best for you?

I was on the fence during my pre-op 14 week program- which one- and do I want surgery...

it became clearer to me as I learned the info.

I do miss my salads... was vegan for two years prior... I may start adding spinach to my morning shake...

what's the worst that can happen? :D

Niel, FYI, i am eating salads, fresh fruit with no problems now. I have a dislike of "skins" I never had before, but so what. I don't ear GIANT salads like I used to, but eat as much as I want whenever I want. I am eating watermelon right now. I have a kitchen garden, and started eating fresh veg right as the tomatoes started to get ripe. Now theres cucumbers too. I peel the tomatoes (strange) but never hear a peep from sleevie. I started around 4-5 months and by 6 could eat anything.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
