Mememeee, I'm sure by now you've had your gallbladder sono done. Couldnt have been more that 5 to 7 minutes, for anyone else who may be wondering.

First off, how long does the gallbladder ultrasound take? I am scheduled at 7:15 tomorrow for it.

Next, let me tell you, after the first few months of high weight loss, the weight loss I see others sharing is something I could EASILY acheive in my weight watchers days - but I couldn't keep it off! I am using this surgery as a TOOL to help me keep it off too! You still have to change your way of eating and be more active - same as if you did it "naturally." But the sleeve gives you the ability to stay on track easier, not cheat to the extreme. That's my thought on it anyway!

I specifically posted this topic in the "Success" section, because I felt victorious in the way I handled the tech. Should I have reported her to her supervisor? Maybe, but I wasnt interested in getting her in trouble or having her lose her job. I wanted her to hear and comprehend what I was saying which probably wouldnt have happened if I got all loud and started cussin at her. I know what I said hit home because she got all apologetic afterward. I made her realize that she sounded like an a-hole. Will she try and talk someone else out of having surgery? It's definitely possible, but I like to think that she's no longer as ignorant after having being "put in her place". Call me delusional. I dont care. I still feel like I scored a major point for our team!

I did see Juno...great movie!

There was a time in my life when I would've "unleashed" on her too. But with age comes wisdom, and sometimes you have to realize that over exerting yourself over ignorance just isnt worth it. Instead of fighting ignorance you have to cure it with knowlege. That was my approach, and I hope it worked.

Did you ever see the movie Juno? Allison Janney's character goes off on an a preachy ultrasound tech, it's really funny. Deep respect to you for not unleashing on her, I wouldn't have had such control! And bravo to you for nipping it in the bud - if I had known then what I know now, about heredity and so much more, I would have had this surgery when I was only 40-50 lbs overweight, maybe I wouldn't have lost my 20's. I haven't yet had anyone get sanctimonious on me about having surgery but I have now several times been in the extremely awkward and bizarre position of being considered an arbiter or "success" at weight loss; average size women now start -unsolicited- monologues at me about their own weight issues, anxiously describing their progams to me, as though my approval/opinion holds weight? I'm really not explaining myself very well here ... it's kind of like when someone makes a fortune from clever business strategies, everyone wants financial advice, or when you study medicine and become a doctor everyone gives your opinion on all things medical gravitas. It's really wierd to be in a coversation with several women and have them talk about thier diets and exercise regimes and ... exclude (?) me from ... participation in the conversation because ... I'm not a combatant in the trenches of weight struggle? Or so they think. I don't know and I'm really really not explaining myself well but, it's wierd.

The only "easy way out" that I know of are the extremely lucky few who can get to goal on calorie counting and exercise alone and keep it off.

Everything else is anything but...

I LOVE that. I gotta store it in my "clever comebacks" folder!

I had one person say that to me.

I responded with "Would you tell a woman who had to have a c-section that she took the easy way out? No...because it would be rude and insensitive. Just like your comment was to me"

I have to say, considering weight loss surgery the "easy way out" really pisses me off. I can't speak for everyone, but I know for myself, weight loss surgery is anything but an easy solution. It took a very very long time for me to make the decision, after years of trying to lose weight and failing. And the process to get approved for weight loss surgery is anything but easy. So I don't consider it an easy way out but an option that works better for some people. I give a lot of credit to those who have lost significant amounts of weight without it, but doing it this way doesn't make it any less natural or easy.

I am at the beginning of my pursuit to have the surgery, and quite frankly I have been waiting for someone to have some sort of comment like that. So far so good, all positive reactions, but I'm sure some doctor, some tech, some person will say something to piss me off, and I'm all ready for them!

Kudos to you Kayyybeee!!!! You handled yourself with such grace!!!! I think you are right in your sense that you had a much greater impact on this person than if you had gone off on her. Hopefully she will reflect and grow and treat the next patient with the respect they deserve!!!! Like everyone on this board has already said, it's so much harder to keep your cool but you did and you stayed above it, put her in place but in a way that will give her food for thought. Way to go!!! I really respect you for this. Thanks for role modeling!!!!!

KB you handled yourself with true grace! I am sure this tech will keep her tongue in check the next time. Until someone sits down and starts researching what is all involved in the process of WLS they have no idea how truly brave everyone has to be in order to take that step into the OR room. Thanks for sharing with us!

Is it stupid people against wls day???? I had a similar situation today with a doctor here who told me I didn't really need the surgery and could try to reduce my weight with a diet and that wls doesn't really work, that everyone ends up regaining the weight...when i told him that weight loss can be maintained if doc's and nut's instructions are followed he told me "just wait you will see" ........grrrrr

People who think this is the "easy way out" of the problem of being morbidly obese make the think of my favorite quote by Robert Heinlein - "Never underestimate the power of human stupidity". KayyyyBeeee - you handled the woman beautifully.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
