BC of CA: No surgery if BMI above 50

Most of us are familiar with the standard for surgery of BMI of at least 40 (or 35 with complications). Well, here's a new one to me: Blue Cross of CA won't approve bariatric surgery for anyone with a BMI over 50! (This is scary -- mine is 47.) The rationale their medical policy gives for this is that there isn't enough literature documenting the value of doing bariatric surgery for a BMI over 50.:)
