hospital wants out of pocket amount up front

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on July 18th. Today I got a letter from the hospital that said they confirmed my benefits and expect I will have approximately $500 owed out of pocket. They want me to pay this now or at the time of registration. I have had many surgeries and have never had a hospital ask for money up front. Has anyone else been required to pay?

Yes, I had to pay ahead of time, at registration. Good luck with your surgery!!!!

I am a day surgery registrar at a hospital and the reason why the money is collected up front is because the surgery is an elective procedure. If it was an emergency you wouldn't have to pay up front no matter what your benefits said. Good Luck!

For my EGD that is Friday, I had to put down a $200 deposit - which they will charge to my credit card on Friday. They told me that insurance will cover 80% and I have a 20% copay, but they required the deposit upfront.

On Monday when I go for the pre-op teaching, I will have to pay for the surgery in full (I'm self-pay).

My registration is July 1st and expect I will have to pay something. My wife is having her EGD the day after my surgery and will likely have to pay the $122 dollars like I did.

I had to pay my surgeon's copay up front. I was billed for my outpatient copay later on.

I should clarify that I don't have an out of pocket minimum/maximum, just copays & premiums (open ***).

Yep. The days of hospitals and doctors offices being willing to bill it later and accept partial payments are pretty much over in the majority of cases.

Yes, this is normal. My surgery is tomorrow and I got a call last week saying that I needed to come up with $3300 before surgery! Of course, I said there's NO way I can do that so they are allowing me to pay $850 and bill me for the rest. I'll be paying that today! Ugh! <_< And I still have to pay my doc $500+ (already paid nearly $300) but he is allowing until July 1. Thank goodness! All of this and I have insurance! Crazy! The hospital did say that the hospital bill alone would exceed $17,000...which will be billed to insurance. That's not including the anthiesalogist (sp?), blood work, etc. I trade you! lol I'm just so thankful that I don't have to pay the entire amount. That would be impossible for us.

WoW, the days of old are gone where you let the bills wash out and then pay.

I just had my copay and it was $50.00 that I had to pay upfront. Most insurance companies make you pay at the time of service now a days.

I haven't scheduled mine yet but being a self pay patient, both the surgeon and hospital requires payment at least 10 days before my surgery date. When I gave birth last year, the lady came to my room asking for my co-pay as I was breastfeeding my daughter. I nearly ripped her head off then sent my husband down to give them a piece of my mind since I couldn't and their $600. Lol

This is normal. I have to pay the hospital my remaining deductible and out of pocket expenses. They will let me pay 1/2 up front and pay the remaining out over 12 months. I'm thankful since the total due is $2034. So $1034 goes to them in a couple of weeks.

My hospital co-pay was 300 and I asked them if I could make payments and they had no problem with it.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
